The City of Selma
The Place You Want to Be!
Introduction
The City of Selma is located on State Highway 99 in California's Great Central Valley and is
conveniently located halfway between California's two largest population areas - Los Angeles
(207 miles to the south) and the Bay Area (209 miles to the north).
Hub City
The City of Selma (population 23,977) has become the retail and service Hub City for southeast
Fresno, northern Tulare and eastern Kings counties with a retail trade area of over 150,000.
With three regional shopping centers anchored with Wal-Mart, J.C. Penney, Office Max, Rite
Aid, Save Mart Super Market, Food 4 Less, Home Depot and Selma 6 Cinema, the City of Selma has developed a shopping base of over 150,000 persons. Three additional regional
shopping centers are proposed.
Add to this the Fahrney Automotive Center and the Selma Auto Mall, with their major
advertising programs, the shopping base increases drastically. The automobile dealerships
bring in customers from as far away as Bakersfield and Modesto. Auto dealerships currently
located in Selma are: Ford, Buick, Scion, GMC, Toyota, Honda, Chevrolet, Mazda, Nissan,
Hyundai, Kia, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and RAM Trucks.
Auto Dealerships Expand
Selma’s Auto Dealership continues strong. Selma Nissan opened a new 21,500 square foot
facility across the street from its former facility. The older building now houses an expanded
Mitsubishi dealership. In 2011 we opened a new Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram dealership and
moved an expanded Hyundai showroom. Two of our other present dealership have purchased
property and are looking to expand within the next year. Both dealerships have been given expanded territory by and for expansions of their companies. Additionally, we have two new
dealerships interested in locating in Selma.
Sales Tax Leader
Because of the strong retail sales base, the City of Selma is the per capita sales tax leader in
Fresno County and ranks only behind the larger cities of Fresno and Clovis in total taxable
sales.
The Annual Taxable Sales for the past decade (in thousands of dollars) shows a strong and
healthy growth. Even during the decline in the economy, Selma still has a retail presence in the
area and continues to maintain a regional presence.
Big 5 Sporting Goods, JC Penney, Gamestop, Aaron’s Furniture, Rue 21 Open
Showing Selma's continued regional growth Rue 21 is the latest retail addition to Selma. Big 5
Sporting Goods and Game Stop in the Vineyard Plaza Shopping Center. Aaron’s
Furniture has opened a store on Whitson Street as well.

Commercial Developments
Showing that Selma is a commercial hub the City of Selma has received plans for additional two
major regional commercial projects which includes: the Rockwell Shopping Center – West of the
present Garden Vineyard Shopping Center—which has an approved plan and EIR; Selma Crossing at Mt. View and SR 99. Retailers are showing high interest in these regional shopping
centers.
Buxton Retail Study
The City of Selma competed a Retail Study with the Buxton Company. The Company identified a
trade area as well as businesses that fit the Lifestyle Segmentation within the area. Twenty core
businesses were identified and presently one has located in Selma while two others are determining the location within Selma that best fits their needs with a retail base of over 150,000.
New Interchange, Interchange Upgrades and Highway Realignment
The City of Selma is working with Caltrans on the development of a new interchange at Dinuba
Avenue as well as the reconfiguration and widening of the existing Dinuba Avenue. The City also
is working with Caltrans on the realignment of Highland Avenue (SR 43) to the west to make
connection to the new interchange at Dinuba and SR 99.
In addition the City is working at the upgrading the interchange at SR 99 and Mtn. View Avenue.
All of these upgrades are being done to assist in the planned commercial and residential growth
anticipated in Selma.
