Exhibition launch:
Fri 7 Apr, 6pm, all welcome
No Copyright Infringement
Intended explores the
relationship between copyright
and culture in the digital age,
investigating how the concept
of ownership and authorship is
evolving and coming into conflict
with outdated copyright and
intellectual property laws.
4–5
Available as Silver Screenings – see p12
For the many people now mass
sharing, copying and remixing
seems like a natural form of
self expression. Rather than
embracing this change and
using it to their advantage, rights
holders often resort to reinforcing
outdated laws − penalising those
who copy − and placing barriers
on technology’s ability to share
information and content freely.
A group exhibition featuring
eight national and international
artists working across a range
of creative practices, it highlights
the ongoing tension between
production and copyright,
considers the new artistic
possibilities created through
this tension and suggests new
ways forward for artists, rights
holders and the wider creative
community.
Curated by Antonio Roberts,
a new media artist and curator
based in Birmingham. Kindly
supported by Arts Council
England.
PANEL DISCUSSION:
COPYRIGHT AS FRAME
AND PRISON − A PUBLIC
CONVERSATION
Fri 28 Apr, 6.30pm – 8.30pm
Alongside our exhibition No
Copyright Infringement Intended,
this discussion will highlight the
disruptive power of technological
innovation on culture and copyright.
CURATOR’S TOUR
Using the works within the exhibition
as a starting point, a panel including
artists and copyright experts will
discuss how emerging technologies
are shaping creative processes, how
(perceptions of) copyright enable
and inhibit those technologicallyenabled processes and the
appropriateness of appropriation.
Join No Copyright Infringement
Intended curator Antonio Roberts
for a guided tour of the exhibition,
followed by a chance to ask
questions about the show. The
tour will be preceded by a short
presentation called Ctrl + C, looking
at the one-way system of cultural
appropriation by corporations.
This event is free − book via
our website.
The tour is free to attend −
no booking necessary.

France/Germany 2016,

Olivier Assayas’s (Clouds of Sils

of ghost story and mystery thriller.
Maureen is a young American
woman employed as a personal
shopper in Paris, working for a
ghastly celebrity. But she is also
a medium, waiting for a sign from
her twin brother’s spirit that he is

Dir: Kleber Mendonça Filho
Cast: Sonia Braga
Brazil 2016, 2hrs 26mins, subtitled
“As far back as I can remember,
I always wanted to be a gangster.”
A bonafide classic, Scorsese’s crime
epic is based on the true-story of
Henry Hill – a small-time gangster
who with his two friends Jimmy
(Robert De Niro) and Tommy (an
electric Joe Pesci) works his way up
through the Mob’s hierarchy. Back
on the big screen where it belongs,
Goodfellas has been newly reissued
in 4K by the BFI as part of their
Scorsese season.
65 year-old widow Clara is the last
remaining occupant of her old
seaside apartment building, the
‘Aquarius’. All her neighbours have
accepted offers from an ambitious
development firm, but Clara refuses
to move despite the increasingly
aggressive actions of the company
– including renting a room next door
to host an orgy! A parable of
tradition versus modernity, of human
happiness versus the relentless
march of progress, with a terrific
central performance from Sonia
Braga as the determined Clara.

Cynthia Nixon delivers a career best
performance in Terence Davies’s
(Sunset Song) moving biopic of
American poet Emily Dickinson.
Returning home at the age of 18
after she refused to join in with the
evangelical devotion of her school,
Dickinson began her life as a poet
writing between 3am and dawn.
Slowly removing herself from
society, Dickinson lived as a recluse,
cut off from others as she poured
her hopes, passion and rebellion
into her poetry.
STRAIGHT TO HELL
15
Fri 28 Apr, 8.45pm
Dir: Alex Cox
Cast: Joe Strummer, Sy Richardson
UK 1987, 1hr 26mins
To mark the 40th anniversary of
The Clash’s legendary debut album,
Social Cinema is proud to present
a screening of the punk rock
spaghetti Western Straight to Hell,
starring Joe Strummer. Featuring
a host of musical and film luminaries
(The Pogues, Elvis Costello, Jim
Jarmusch, Kathy Burke), the film
follows a group of bank robbers with
a suitcase full of money, hiding out
in a bizarre Western town.
Dispensing with narrative logic,
it’s a joyously anarchic affair.
MAYBE YOU MISSED, MAYBE WE MISSED…
Another chance to catch some of the biggest films of the past few months.

Airport, US Airways flight 1549 ran
into a flock of geese. Faced with
multiple engine failure and with
only seconds to act, Sully decided
to ditch the plane into the Hudson
Chazelle picked up the Oscar for
Best Director in February for this
gorgeous musical. Aspiring actress
Mia (Stone) meets aspiring jazz club
owner Sebastian (Gosling). Thrown
together in the artificial world of
modern day LA, the couple try to
stay together, pursuing their dreams
in a city notorious for crushing them.
Joyful, swooningly melancholy and
very funny, La La Land is a delight.
