Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
Math
Recall facts to multiply up to 10 by 10 with automaticity
and recall the corresponding division facts.
Activities:
• Two hands – This is a two player game nothing
but a method to keep score. It is a bit like
“rock, paper, scissors…” Students count off
one, two, three and then hold up one or both
hands to represent a number. The first child to
multiply out the numbers to find the product
scores a point. The first to score 100 points
wins the game.
• Multiplication Snap – This is a game played with
a deck of cards. Shuffle the cards between two
players. Place cards face down and take turns
pulling cards up one at a time. The first to
multiply the two cards together and find the
product wins the cards. The player with the
most cards at the end of the deck wins the
game.
Determine the value of coins and bills. Show the value
of an amount greater than a dollar in terms of cents as
well as dollars and cents.
Activities:
• Empty your purse/pockets and have your child
count the money.
• Discuss different ways to make the same
amount.
Represent a number on a number line as being
between two consecutive multiples of 10; 100; 1,000,
or 10,000 and use words to describe relative size of
numbers in order to round whole numbers
Activities:
• When shopping at the store, round the cost of
items. (ex. An item costing 129 would be
“closer to” 130 (nearest 10) or 100 (nearest
100)
• After counting your loose change, have your
child round the whole number (134 cents) to
the nearest 10, 100, or 1000.
• http://mrnussbaum.com/halfcourt/ Students
can play a rounding game at this link. To make
it more hands on, give your child numbers to
round to the nearest 10 or 100.
