Mortgage Procedures and Regulations Session: Making Sure your Affiliate Follows the Rules: The Ins and Outs of Family
Selection, Loan Origination and Optimal Homeowner Experience.
Sonia Lee, Director, Affiliate Financial Services - US Office – Habitat for Humanity International
Sonia Lee joined HFHI in August 2012, after spending more than 30 years as a financial services professional. She brings with
her experience in internal audit, mortgage operations, and vendor management. Affiliate Financial Services focuses on
providing guidance and support in the areas of homeowner services and mortgage lending, enabling affiliates to comply with
regulatory requirements in origination and servicing. HFHI’s Mortgage Procedures and Regulations (MPAR) initiative is co-led
by Lee, who also manages the ABA online compliance-training program.
She will cover every aspect of the new mortgage regulations and laws, starting with a general session about the Fair Housing
Law and equal access to credit as well as the broader concepts and laws concerning family selection, loan origination and
closings.
Sue Chenevert has worked with Habitat for Humanity for 20 years and has approximately 17 years of experience in mortgage
lending. She was Director of Finance and Programs for HFH Greater Baton Rouge from 1998 to 2007 and has been Executive
Director of Habitat for Humanity of LA for the past eight years. Chenevert is an NMLS licensed Mortgage Loan Originator serving
Louisiana Habitat affiliates and is eligible for licensure in approximately 40 states. As a licensed mortgage loan originator, she has
originated more than $20 million in Habitat mortgages. She has served for 4 years on the HFH International Mortgage Procedures
and Regulations Initiative team to assist Habitat affiliates in implementing compliant mortgage procedures at the affiliate level.
She has presented numerous workshops for Habitat for Humanity affiliates, including, in particular, mortgage lending laws and
procedures in the areas of mortgage loan origination, underwriting, and in mortgage servicing.
She holds a Master of Science degree from Louisiana State University.
Chenevert will get into the hands-on, practical aspects of the changes in mortgage regulation and spend time problem-solving
in general. Both will engage in a Q&A session.

Keynote Speaker: Gene Nichol
Gene Nichol is Boyd Tinsley distinguished professor of law at the University of North Carolina. His scholarly work is supported by
the North Carolina Poverty Research Fund. From 2005 to 2008, he was president of the College of William and Mary. Nichol was
Burton Craige professor and dean of the law school at UNC (1999-2005); law dean at the University of Colorado (1988-1995); and
Cutler professor and director of the William & Mary Bill of Rights Institute (1985-1988).
Nichol is co-author of Federal Courts (third edition, West, 2015) and author of Seeing the Invisible: Putting a Face on Poverty in
North Carolina (2014, Kindle edition). He’s published articles in the Harvard, Yale, Chicago, Michigan, Pennsylvania, California,
Duke and Virginia law reviews. He has been a political columnist for the Rocky Mountain News and hosted a public affairs
television show, Culture Wars, for KBDI in Denver. He has been a monthly op-ed writer for The News & Observer of Raleigh for
more than a dozen years. He publishes regularly in The Progressive Populist, The Charlotte Observer, and has written for The
Nation and The Washington Post. He is executive producer of the documentary, A Generation of Change: Bill Friday, Terry Sanford
and North Carolina from the 1920s-1972 (UNC-TV, 2015).
Nichol attended Oklahoma State University, receiving a degree in philosophy (1973) and playing varsity football. He obtained his
J.D. from the University of Texas in 1976, graduating Order of the Coif.

Presenters
Torre Nelson received his formal education from Wheaton College, graduating with a Bachelors of Arts (Psychology), and from
Northern Illinois University where he received a Masters of Science (Adult and Continuing Education). Nelson joined Habitat for
Humanity International in 1993 as an International Partner in La Paz, Bolivia. In that role he helped establish the HFH Bolivia
national organization before moving to Americus, Ga., where he joined the Latin America and Caribbean regional team. He
resides in San Jose, Costa Rica, as Vice President for the Latin America and Caribbean division of HFHI where he provides
leadership and management oversight to operations in 18 countries with local organizations in more than 700 communities. He
is married to Lisa Nelson; they have six children.
Kevin Campbell, President and CEO, joined Habitat Wake in April 2010. Campbell has worked in the Habitat for Humanity
community for more than 27 years. Immediately prior to coming to Wake County, he served as Director of Building Industry
Relations for Habitat for Humanity International, where he was heavily involved in leading the national Builders’ Blitz and in
expanding ReStore operations to provide support for Habitat affiliates across the country. Prior to joining the Habitat
International staff, Campbell was the founding executive director of a Habitat affiliate in the Lynchburg, Va., area and, during his
nine-year tenure there, he brought that affiliate to national prominence based on innovation and the high number of homes
provided for families. Kevin holds a BBA degree in accounting from James Madison University.

Topic: Telling our story to donors. What’s our story? Join this interactive workshop to learn how to share compelling stories
that inspire action with donors. Attendees will discuss how both HFHI and affiliates can collaborate to put the new brand and
messaging materials in action to communicate with donors and raise more money

Presenters
Chris Clarke is Senior Vice President, Marketing and Communications, Habitat for Humanity International. Following a 21-year
career at Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Clarke joined Habitat for Humanity International in 2003 and is responsible for overseeing
the Habitat brand. He leads the Communications division for the organization and his team supports the following areas:

Web and social - managing five million visitors a year to habitat.org and nearly one million followers across social media
•
Habitat magazine, storytelling and photo and video
•
Public and media relations
•
Publications, graphic design and Habitat’s printing facility
•
Fundraising and partner support
•
The annual Carter Work Project
Dr. Sarah W. Mackey serves on the affiliate services team as a resource development subject matter expert for affiliates engaged
in Neighborhood Revitalization. Mackey has served as executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County in
Springfield, Ill., and currently serves on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity of Illinois. Mackey received her doctorate
in public administration, masters in public administration, and graduate certificate in nonprofit management from the University
of Illinois - Springfield. She is also a graduate of the Fundraising School at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana and
received her B.A. in economics from Hanover College. Her research specialties include nonprofit board governance, fundraising,
and strategic planning. Her groundbreaking dissertation research identified relationships between the size of the board of
directors and charitable contributions.
Sarah has earned professional credentials including the Certified Fund Raising Executive, Certified Communications Professional
and Certified Volunteer Administration certification.
