Present status of the design
• All components of the additional shielding have been designed in detail within
CATIA in the last 3 months, and production drawings have been prepared.
• In particular the additional shielding behind HCAL required the implementation
of the HCAL design in CATIA, which was not done in the past.
HCAL beam plug with beam-pipe
when the C-side is closed (2014)
• Large clearance between beam-pipe beam plug for both the HCAL and
ECAL beam-plugs.
• The reason is mainly that space had been foreseen for the bake-out
instrumentation, which is however not permanently installed.
• The beam-plug under M2 goes much closer to the bake-out
instrumentation and the beam-pipe.

• Clearance of 25mm - 45mm between beam-pipe beam plug for both the HCAL
and ECAL beam-plugs.
• The HCAL beam-plug has three parts (although it has been molded in one piece).
The part close to M2 would need to be modified (in material and in radius).

• Values for the clearance are not the same as on the C-side
• We had overlooked so far that the beam-plug is topbottom asymmetric
• A single plug made of lead is our preference

Design for shielding behind HCAL
• The shielding behind HCAL has been implemented in CATIA , based on
production drawings for the HCAL modules.
• Total weight of tungsten shielding per side: 410kg
 The intention is to verify ones more all HCAL related dimensions in the
cavern next week and to finalize the design then.
 The cost estimation with a potential supplier for tungsten is in progress
Back side of HCAL
 We consider to cut this piece in order to ease the installation of the additional shielding

 On the right side it is shown for another module
Conclusions and next steps
 The EDR for the shielding and the beam plugs is scheduled for
January 18, 2017 at 14:00 in 20-1-004
 Gloria Corti and Yuri Guz agreed to act as reviewers
 We met end of November with the vacuum group, where the suggested
dimensions for the HCAL plug and the procedure has been approved
– Finalize and document the engineering design
 Requires some measurements of dimensions next week
 The production drawings for the new beam plugs are done and need to be checked
– Some simulations need to be redone
 In particular important for the final choice of material
 At the same time we should implement the realistic design of the additional shielding
behind HCAL (and update the beam-plug design (work mostly done by Robert Paluch)
– Finalize the note summarizing the performance of the shielding
– Document the procedure for HCAL closing
