Congratulations to all the pupils selected to represent
Futures in our Team Squads for term one. Selection of
these players is based on ability, dedication and attitude.
There are ten players [five boys and five girls] in each of our
six programs: Red, Orange, Green, Futures, Challenger, Pro
and Grand Slam. These sixty players form the basis of the
best players in our academy. Team squad players are taught
exclusively by Head Coaches and have one hour squads.
Team squads are by invitation only.

“World Tours”
As the benefits of the modified Hot Shots Coaching Program with the use of the
various coloured balls becomes more recognized, the understanding that players
can start competition at a younger age has increased with the Red, Orange &
Green Ball competitions all full this term. The enthusiasm of these players has been
tremendous and we look forwards to a great year ahead. The results, thus far, are
as below. Check out where you are on the ladder by visiting our website and look
under junior competitions:
Hot Shots Red [1&2]
The Red Ball 1 sees mainly a group of players’ new to the competition, a modified
points scoring system in Red Ball has Monique Collins 231pts narrowly leading
Sam Lidstone 229pts. The Red Ball 2 competition is made up mainly of Team
Squad Players, Lachlan Gillard 239pts leads Varick Boyd 235pts with the rest of
the group trailing in a very tight bunch.
Hot Shots Orange (B, A) & Green (B, A)
The Orange B Grade is definitely the most tightly contested with 2pts separating
the first 5 & the rest not too far behind. Ben Kennedy 26pts has a 1pt lead over
sister Connie Kennedy, while Gabby Lidgewood, Josh Rawson & Jack
Russo all have a chance of winning on 24pts. Grace Molly 29pts has a 1pt lead in
Orange A Grade over Fergus Boyd, while Max Pendlebury and Chris Golz
have convincing but not unassailable leads in Green B & A grades.
Futures (B, A) & Challenger (B, A)
The dominance of the boys is broken by Zoe Kantanis 25pts, who shares the lead
in Futures A Grade with Nick Johns, Natasha Kendall 23pts is also right within
striking distance. Sam Kristensen 23pts leads Futures B Grade. Challenger A
Grade looks like a 3 way battle between Tristan Clements 24pts, Patrick
Schroeder 22pts & Tomo Sekine 20pts, while Hugh Pearson on 25pts looks
in command in the Challenger B Grade.
Pro (B, A) & Grand Slam
Two of our most consistent performers are in battle for the Grand Slam title, last
terms winner Mitchell Duckett 29pts will desperately be trying to make up
ground on Michael Cheung 31pts. Piers Rogers Pro B and James Robertson
Pro A are in strong positions to take out titles in their grades.

Your club needs you !
Please call the office if you would like
to know more about how to become a

not rely on coaching to provide your
only hitting opportunities!

held at East Malvern Tennis Club the
largest Ball kid try outs in Victoria for
the Aussie Open. If you are keen to try

Hot Shots TV Commercial
Five Futures kids were asked to be in
the latest Tennis Australia “Hot Shots”
commercial which has been screening
on TV since the Aussie Open.
We thank the pupils for being involved
and although they make up the
“background” of the promo we are
sure the experience was well received
from all involved. A special thanks to
Futures tennis coach Tim Miles for also
being involved.

Nike Promo
Fifteen very lucky Futures Tennis
Academy kids had the opportunity
of a lifetime when they were invited to meet Roger Federer,
Serena Williams and Bernard
Tomic prior to this years Aussie
Open. The invitation was part of a
Nike promotion. The picture above
shows Roger posing with Nike
shoes with FTA pupils Cam
Lucas, Harry Lister, Mitch
Duckett and Luke Nikoloskwi.
Aussie Coaches Conference
In January Wes was invited to
present a Red Ball class at the Australian Coaches Conference.
Six Red ball players were asked to
help present from our Futures
Team Squads. They were:
Andrew Callaghan, Hunter
Howard, Matthew Adams,
Thomas Feehan, Bianca
Weller, Daisy Molloy.
A big thank you to all the pupils
and their parents for coming along
on the day. There were over 300
coaches in attendance and the
kids did an amazing job.
History at Australian Open
Hot Shots - Challenge Match
Futures Tennis Academy was invited by
Tennis Australia to attend a Challenge
Match between four academies held at
Melbourne Park just before the Men’s
Open Final for ten and under Hot Shot
players.
In the history of tennis there has never
been a Grand Slam tournament that has
ever held such an event.
John Fitzgerald was host along with the
some of the highest profile TA staff
umpiring / supervising six and seven year
old matches you would ever hope to see.
There was: Robin O’Neil [Community
Tennis Manager], Geoff Quinlan [Coach
Development] and Kim Kachel [High
Performance] even celebrity guest James
Hird child played in the event
It just shows that Tennis Australia are
very serious about promoting Hot Shots
and having their highest paid staff understand the benefits of having a kids program
scaled down to kids size.
For the record Futures came second by
just 21 points over the course of 72
matches for the day held in the Red, Orange and Green ball events.
Well done to all the pupils who
represented Futures with pride!
From the four academies there were over
100 pupils who played on the day.
Next year T.A. hope to make it an even
bigger event with eight academies invited.
