DEFENSE & SELF-PROTECTION
Jamming Explosive Devices (JED)
General
EL/K-7017 is a family of systems for Jamming Explosive
Devices (JED), tasked to provide protection against Radio
Controlled Improvised Electronic Devices (RCIED). It can
be employed as an escort system to a convoy or to secure
a designated geographical area.
EL/K-7017 JED has several system configurations and deployment possibilities, tailored to specific customer needs.
The JED is a compact high performance system employing
advanced technologies in signal acquisition and processing, signal analysis and jamming techniques.
Several JED systems can be integrated to operate as an
extended system.
The JED system is designed to operate in a fully automatic
mode. The operator’s tasks are to program the system to
counter the expected threats in the operational scenario
and to monitor its operation. Once programmed, the system
operates autonomously. The operator can enhance the
system’s performance by adapting it to the specific
theater scenario.
The system is designed to minimize interference
with friendly communication links.
The system enables post-mission threat analysis and
evaluation by recording the events during active
jamming.
Typical applications are: protection of the area around
a moving convoy of vehicles or to secure the operation
area of a bomb squad tasked to neutralize an RCIED.
Capabilities
The system’s installations are: Ground Fix, Ground
Mobile or Airborne.
The JED offers frequency coverage of 25-3000MHz.
The system is modular. The actual system configuration,
e.g. number of Receivers, Transmitters and Effective
Radiated Power are selected in accordance with the
customer scenario and specific requirements.

Description
Operation
The JED system has four subsystems:
CJS - Control Jamming Subsystem, comprising
the following elements:
- Wideband Receiver
- Detection and analysis unit, employing a Digital
Signal Processor (DSP)
- Exciter - generates the jamming frequencies and
waveforms
- DRP - Digital data and signal Recording and Production
- System Controller
PA - Power Amplifier(s), frequency coverage and
transmission power are adapted to user requirements
Antenna(s) - specifications are adapted to user
requirements
OWS - Operator Work Station, usually a ruggedized
The system has two modes of operation:
Responsive jamming during the mission
Theater analysis (optional)
Responsive Jamming Mode
In this mode the system is fully automatic. It acquires
the Radio signals within the arena, and generates
jamming responses.
The system Wide Band Receiver continuously
performs “look through” intervals while jamming.
The “look through” intervals are used for signal acquisition and detection of threat signals.
The system processor identifies the friendly communications and known signals and all others are
jammed.
Theater Analysis Mode (Optional)
Note: In an unmanned mode of operation the OWS is
not required.

Simplified Block Diagram of the JED System.
This is an off-line mission mode. In this mode the
system is manually operated.
The System Receivers and Processor are employed to
acquire, analyze and note the signals of certain geographic areas in order to be able to filter out these
signals during a future missions within these areas.
The system can study and evaluate the spectral
environment by using its integral analysis and recordings tools.
