Land of the Pharaohs The The Papyrus Times National Pike District Cub Scout Day Camp 2007 Volume 1, Number 2 IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM PHARAOH JACK: INSTRUCTIONS FOR CUB SCOUT DAY CAMP PARENTS June 2525-29, 2007 Important dis dispatch from the Upper Kingdom of Howard County Fairgrounds, 17 June 2007 1. Day Camp Arrival: Please plan to deliver your Cub Scout(s) to their Den area in the Main Exhibition Hall of the Howard County Fairgrounds between 7:45 and 8:00 a.m., each day Monday through Friday morning (see map on last page), and sign him in with the appropriate Den leader. Do not drop your child off without signing him in!!! Authorized parents and guardians may make changes at morning sign-in to the list of persons you authorize to signout your child at dismissal. Den assignments are posted at www.npdaycamp.com 2. Dismissal each day will be at 3:15 p.m. so please plan to pick up your son(s) between 3:15 and 3:30 p.m. at the Den area in the Main Exhibition Hall. 3. Please take advantage of Early Registration on Sunday June 24, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Main Exhibition Hall, Howard County Fairgrounds, if you are able. At early registration, you will be able to (1) pick up your son’s camp shirt, (2) fill in missing information or make final corrections and changes to registration information, (3) drop off medications for the camp nurse, (4) add or subtract persons authorized to pick up your son at dismissal, and (5) have the opportunity to meet other parents in your son’s Den during Sunday’s camp setup. 4. Youth Volunteers (Boy Scouts and registered youth over 14 years old) are expected to report to the Youth Volunteer check-in area between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m. (yes- that’s a.m., not p.m. guys!!) next to the Administration Area in the Main Exhibition Hall and receive their daily assignments. 5. On Monday, expect a delay to sign-in your son at the Den area unless you attended Early Registration on Sunday. 6. If your Cub Scout will be late or absent from camp at anytime during the week, please call ( number is being prepared ). This number will be posted on www.npdaycamp.com 7. Each day, your child (Cub Scouts, Junior Campers, and Youth Volunteers) should bring a backpack or book bag containing the following: a. A bag lunch that does not need refrigeration, and preferably packed in an insulated and labeled lunch bag. Ice packs or frozen juice bags are a great idea to include!! b. Sun screen, which should also be applied before getting to camp. No adult except the camp nurse is permitted to apply sunscreen to your child. c. A poncho or raincoat (inexpensive ponchos are better than raincoats for use in camp). Camp will continue during rain events except during thunderstorms. The PapyrusTimes June 19, 2007 d. Drinks in recyclable plastic bottles (for lunch only) or single-serving juice cartonsunopened. Do not send can or bottle soda, or any re-sealable and re-fillable bottled drinks (example: no sports bottles). No caffeinated drinks. e. A morning snack. f. A “sit upon”, blanket or cushion for sitting in the Den area. No camp chairs are permitted for children. 8. Each day, your child (Cub Scouts, Junior Campers, and Youth Volunteers) should wear the following: a. Sun screen, and apply it before getting to camp. No adult except the camp nurse is permitted to apply sunscreen to your child. b. His camp T-shirt, or else his Cub Scout uniform shirt. c. Shorts or swim trunks. He will probably get wet at Water Games!!! d. Old closed-toe shoes such as sneakers. Do not wear open-toed sandals, flip flops or open-toe shoes. Wear only closed-toe sneakers. Open-toed footwear does not provide protection from sharp stones, glass fragments and metal that is often found on the fairgrounds. e. Insect repellant is optional. Insects have not been a problem in recent camps but this varies in accordance with the seasonal weather. 9. The camp will have a “Trading Post” for the purchase of [not cheap but very inexpensive] snacks and small treats. Please do not send large amounts of money with your child. One or two dollars should be sufficient. 10. The following items are prohibited at Day Camp, so please do not allow your child to bring them: a. I-Pods b. Game Boys, PSPs, or other hand-held electronics. c. Cell phones. d. Knives 11. Your child will be provided with a camp hat by the Den leader on the first day of camp. The hat will be worn at all times that the child is outside but must remain in the Den box at the end of each day except Friday when they may be taken home. 12. If you and your child arrive after 8 a.m., go to the Administration area in the Main Exhibition Hall to sign-in. 13. To assure your child’s safety at dismissal, your Den leader may ask for personal identification to confirm your identity or the identity of other persons you have authorized to sign out your child. Only you and other persons you have specifically designated on your child’s registration form are permitted to sign out your child. NOTE: Mere recognition of the adult by the child is not sufficient identification to release the child to the adult!! The adult must be an authorized person. 14. Please, please, please!!! Check with your Cub Scout’s Den leader to see if you can assist with making the camp a more pleasant experience for the boys by loaning a wagon, cooler, extra drinks, snacks, etc. Remember…the National Pike Day Camp is an all-volunteer effort!!! The PapyrusTimes June 19, 2007 15. Visiting Camp: If you would like to visit camp, you may do so only by checking in at the Administration Desk in the Main Exhibition Hall. Friday June 29 will be Family Visitors Day. Cub Scout family members are invited to bring a lunch and accompany their Cub Scout around Camp- but please check in at the Administration Desk first!!! 16. Family Campfire Night: distributed Monday. Thursday June 28, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Details will be 17. Medicines: The First Aid station is located at the Administration Area within the Main Exhibition Hall and will be staffed by a Nurse Practitioner (“camp nurse”). Please deliver all required medicines noted on the medical registration forms to the Nurse at the First Aid Station. Please include explicit instructions- the instructions provided on medicine containers do not always provide sufficient or complete details on the prescribed use. 18. Would you like to check the camp area? Camp families are welcome to visit our camp area on Sunday June 24 for Early Registration and CAMP SETUP DAY. In fact, if you can spend a few hours and are willing to do some work, we would love to have your help with camp setup. Our staff expects to be there from 8 a.m. until dark (and beyond…?) getting camp ready for Monday. We’re looking forward to a great, enchanting week in the ancient Land of the Pharaohs…here in West Friendship, Maryland!
