For the first-year students: Welcome to your School of Music. Now an earthquake-safe building speckled with some new windows, Howard Hall is ready to begin a new school year. Even this early in the year, there are so many exciting things going on— Spirit of the West marching band has hit record membership, there is a recital this week featuring three of our outstanding faculty, Portland Cello Project is performing in Reynolds Recital Hall, and the most successful tuba soloist in the world is playing with the Wind Symphony and the marching band— all within the next two weeks! As you juggle practicing and studying this semester, be sure to keep your eye on the concert schedule; not only is there a mandatory minimum, but as music Kaitlyn Agnew majors you should want Music & Mathematics to attend as many as possible, right? Best of season arrives! I look luck in your classes, forward to seeing you all studios, and performance in the halls of Howard this ensembles. Try to find year. time to get outside and enjoy the remainder of the warm weather Bozeman has to offer before ski MSU School of Music Newsletter Page 2 Spirit of the West Marching Band Band Camp August 19-24 The College of Arts and Architecture’s Spirit of the West Marching Band started all-days an entire week before classes began. With a record of 130 members, and over half of those freshman, SotW is the largest student organization on campus. Page 3 MSU School of Music Newsletter Portland Cello Project Created in 2007, the Portland Cello Project (PCP) is an internationally performing cello ensemble recognized for playing across all genres of music, especially those not written for cello. With varying stage set-ups and unique musical collaborations, PCP shows are unique and inventive. Their three-fold mission of performing anywhere, playing anything, and including all musical communities is succeeded as their immense repertoire ranges from Jay-Z to Dave Brubeck to video game themes. The Portland Cello Project comes to Reynolds Recital Hall on Sept. 8 and features Jolie Holland, an American singer and performer, who, like PCP, combines elements of various musical genres. The concert begins at 7pm. Tickets are $15 available at Cactus Records. MSU School of Music Newsletter Page 4 Wind Symphony and Spirit of the West features Patrick Sheridan in “Tuba Kick Off” As the world’s only full-time tuba soloist, Patrick Sheridan has an extensive performance schedule exceeding 75 concerts annually. Aside from a busy performance life, Patrick is a dedicated educator, composer, arranger, instrumental design consultant, and a frequent guest conductor. He is also co-author of the internationally successful breathing program, The Breathing Gym, a method used very regularly in the School of Music. Patrick is on music faculties at Arizona State University and UCLA. The Wind Symphony will be performing two pieces with him in the “Tuba Kick Off” concert: The Strait of Hormuz, which he co-composed, and the Tuba Bee. Spirit of the West marching band will feature him as the Wizard of Oz in the September 14 football game halftime field show, Champ Goes to Oz. “Tuba Kick Off” is September 13 at 7:30pm in Reynolds Recital Hall. Tickets are $10 general and $5 students.
