St. John Central’s Open House is March 31st

In today’s first reading from Jeremiah we have
some of the most important words spoken to us
in the Old Testament: The days are coming, says
the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with
the house of Israel and the house of Judah.(Jer
31:31) Here is the reason they are so important.
Scott Hahn defines a biblical covenant as a kinship bond between two parties, with conditions
or obligations, established by an oath or its
equivalent. (Dictionary of the Bible, Scott Hahn
Gen. Ed., p. 168) He goes on to say that there is
now consensus among Catholic, Protestant and
Jewish Bible scholars that a “covenant” is, in its
essence, a legal means to establish kinship between two previously unrelated parties. (ibid)
Covenant is the way God chose to reveal himself
to us, to redeem us, and to promise us eternal
life in Jesus. This truth, revealed in the Bible, is
the basis of Christianity. The Bible is a covenant
document. The Old and New Testaments are really Old and New Covenants. The word
"testament" is Latin for “covenant.” God made
covenants with Abraham, Noah, Abraham, Moses
and David in the Old Testament. These were all
temporary in nature. However, as Jeremiah
prophesied, we have become part of a new, unbreakable and eternal covenant in Jesus. The
words of institution of the Eucharist say it all,
This is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the
new and eternal covenant which will be poured
out for you… Fr. Tim
