PASTOR’S MESSAGE
On Monday, January 9th, the fourth Archbishop of San Antonio, Most Rev. Patrick F. Flores passed away. He had been living in Padua Place which
is where elderly and infirmed priests of our Archdiocese are cared for by the Missionary
Sisters of St. Anthony, MSSA, a locally established group of sisters who are down to
their last three members. From the book Shepherds in the Image of Christ by Sr. Mary
Diane Langford, C.D.P. we read: “Archbishop Patricio Fernandez Flores was born to
migrant farm workers in Ganado, Texas in 1929, was ordained a priest for the Diocese
of Galveston-Houston in 1956. As a priest, Flores was active in guiding the Church’s
response to the needs of Hispanic Catholics. Before being named the Archbishop of
San Antonio in 1979, Flores served as Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio under Archbishop Francis J. Furey,
and as Bishop of El Paso, TX, from 1978 to 1979. Flores retired as Archbishop in 2004, having served the
archdiocese for 25 years. During his years as archbishop, Flores lived at Assumption Seminary.”
At the time of his retirement, he was the longest serving Archbishop in the United States and the
U.S. born bishop of Hispanic descent. While serving as Auxiliary Bishop in the early 1970’s he was instrumental in being one of the founders of MACC the then Mexican American Cultural Center and now Catholic
College. Thousands of seminarians, religious brothers, sisters, priests and lay leaders came to MACC,
often in the summertime, to take Spanish classes and learn about the cultural realities of the Mexican
American Catholic population in our Church. Through MACC, CTSA, Assumption Seminary and San Fernando Cathedral with its nationally broadcasted Sunday Mass, Archbishop Flores was instrumental in making San Antonio the place where Catholic leaders would come from throughout our country to learn and
refine their Hispanic ministry skills. MACC is located across the street from Assumption Seminary.
On a more personal level, I was disarmed by Archbishop Flores’ humility and simplicity. He would
invite seminarians to visit him on the second floor of the Seminary Administration Building where he would
cook meals for us. Days before I was to be ordained, he took me and my class mates, Father Lenin
(Please, See Page 4)

BAPTISM CLASSES
Naffate and Father Pancho Puente, to dinner. He
stressed the shortage of clergy and told us even
though we might not think we were important, in a
few days once ordained priests we would become
very important because there are not a lot of us!
He told us to care for others, but also to find the
balance to care for ourselves so that we would
have longevity in our ministry. Once I was ordained I understood what he meant as we continue
to minister in a Church where the words “the harvest is plenty and laborers are few” have never
rung more true.
Farewell Archbishop Flores.
Thank you for your years of service to our Church,
Archdiocese and all of the People of God. May we

2017 ARCHBISHOP’S APPEAL
DISCIPLES, SENT BY THE SPIRIT
The 2017 Archbishop’s Appeal Campaign has begun. The theme for this year
is Disciples, Sent by the Spirit. The Archdiocese Archbishop’s Appeal is
$4,500,00. Our parish Goal is $208,838. This week you will receive a letter
from Archbishop Gustavo requesting your participation in the 2017 Archbishop’s Appeal. Please respond to his request by praying how you and your
family can provide a gift to this year’s Appeal. Your gift to the Appeal will provide housing
and basic necessities for the homeless, education and spiritual formation for seminarians
and deacons, and evangelization and education initiatives for youth, young adults, and
families in our archdiocese. Your generous gift to the Appeal can be made by filling out
the pledge card sent to your home or at your parish. Once completed, place your Appeal
pledge card in the offertory during Mass.
Gifts can also be made online at
www.archsa.org/archbishops-appeal or over the phone with the Appeal Office at
210-734-1604. Thank you for your generosity.
2017 Archbishop’s Appeal Prayer
Merciful God,
You call us to be your disciples to proclaim the Good News to all we meet.
You sent us your Holy Spirit to guide us as we carry our your sacred work.
Help us to respond to your people in need through the Archbishop’s Appeal,
Use our ready hearts and our willing hands to show them the face of your Son Jesus.
Unite us as one in mind and heart as we work together to build your kingdom.
Bless us as shepherds of your good will and fill us with your Spirit’s gifts.
Help us to remember that, like Peter and Andrew,
James, John, Mary Magdalen,
and like the mother of your Son Jesus
We too are called to be your Disciples, Sent by the Spirit.
Amen.
