June 15, 2016 Let us exercise our freedom of speech to preach a gospel of love. Let us arm ourselves, not with weapons, but with all that our faith has taught us and all that has made this country strong —justice, tolerance, diversity, the audacious belief that we can embody God’s highest hopes for our world. And let us boldly insist on a complete rejection of any ideology that even suggests anything other than this: every person is a beloved child of God, always welcomed into relationship and community. Such a tragedy has occurred in Orlando this week. May our voices rise in lament, again. May we pledge our prayers for the victims and the families one more time. But most of all, may we grieve our hatred or our apathy or our lack of courage — or all three. . . It’s time for all of us to take up the prophetic mantle and speak of the power of love before we lose our ability to speak to anything at all. —Amy Butler, pastor, Riverside Church, New York City licensed at Lake Shore Baptist Church excerpted from Baptist News Global Only One Week Left for Compassionate Conversations Survey If you have not yet taken the Compassionate Conversations survey, please do. Input from all church members is needed to guide the church as we consider a Welcoming and Affirming Statement. The survey will remain open for only one more week and will close on June 22nd. No additional responses will be accepted after that date. So, please share your thoughts and perspectives on this issue before the deadline. Please use the link below to access the convenient online survey. If you prefer, a paper survey is available in the church office. Thanks to all who have participated in the Compassionate Conversations survey. Your input has been very valuable. However, summertime is here and the decrease in giving that sometimes happens during summer worries the Finance Committee. And you know what happens when they worry: they stop spending budgeted money on missions and building maintenance and other areas. So, let's all keep up our giving through the summer, so the Finance Committee can relax!! — Kerry Irons Sharing a Little Cool Breeze Fans for Waco The Friends for Life, Meals & Wheels, and Caritas covenant groups are collecting fans help make this summer a little more bearable for those less fortunate. In some instances, your gift could be life-saving. The fans will be equally distributed between the two agencies as a collaborative effort to support older adults in our community. Please drop new or gently used fans by the church on Sunday or during office hours. For more information contact Tammy Woods at 752-0316 or at [email protected]. Welcome, Vernon Davis Sunday morning was a very good morning when we welcomed Vernon Davis to Lake Shore. He has recently moved from Austin to Waco where he is renovating a house on the edge of Cameron Park. The house shares a backyard with Magi and David Davis’ backyard. It’s long been a dream of David’s for his dad to be his close neighbor, and we at Lake Shore are glad that Vernon is making Lake Shore his Waco church home. Congregational life has been central to Vernon’s vocational pilgrimage. A graduate of Baylor and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he served as pastor of Grace Temple Baptist Church in Denton, as Associate at South Main Baptist Church in Houston, and then, from 19711983 as the beloved pastor of First Baptist Church of Alexandria, Virginia, a church where he and his wife, Bennie, made life-long friends. Throughout all these pastorates, Bennie, was his gifted partner in ministry, often working in deaf ministry. In 1983 Vernon joined the faculty of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, assuming the role of VicePresident in 1987. The Davises moved to Abilene in 1995 when Vernon joined the faculty of Logsdon School of Theology as professor of theology and director of graduate studies in Welcome, Andy and Meg Stubblefield theology. He became Logsdon’s dean in 1998. When Vernon retired in 2003, he and Bennie moved to Georgetown. Both Austin natives, they had deep roots in the area. As active members of First Baptist Church, Austin, they developed a significant group of friends, particularly in the Sunday School class that Vernon taught. Those faithful friends walked closely with them for five years during Bennie’s heart surgery, illness, and hospitalizations. They surrounded Vernon with God’s care and love when she died in early 2015 and remain faithful friends to Vernon. Vernon has been an active retiree — preaching in various churches, teaching courses for Logsdon, and travelling to visit family. He enjoys writing material for churches; some of you have read his devotions in Reflections magazine. Vernon’s daughter, Carol Davis Younger, and her husband, Brett, hope he makes a trip to New York soon They have recently moved to Brooklyn to minister at Plymouth Church. His grandson Caleb is entering law school at NYU this fall. His grandson Graham, a lawyer, is the Georgia state coordinator for Faith in Public Life in Atlanta. His granddaughter, Maya, is a nursing student at the University of Texas. We could say so much more, but we look forward to hearing more of Vernon’s stories in Sunday School and as we sit at the table with him on Wednesday nights. We wholeheartedly welcome Vernon Davis to Lake Shore. His wisdom and pastoral spirit will be gifts to us all. concerns to her.
