Teaching and Assessing Reflective Writing

Inclusive Conversation Series with Mary Ryan
Teaching and Assessing
Reflective Writing
Critical reflection is widely regarded as a valuable component of
student learning in higher education. For example, reflection can play
a role in enabling students to engage productively in their first year
experience (FYE); to make connections between theory and practice
in work-integrated learning (WIL); and once they leave university,
to enhance their capacities for lifelong learning in their profession.
Dr Ryan will share the findings and outputs of the Australian Learning
and Teaching Council (ALTC) project “Developing a systematic,
cross faculty approach to teaching and assessing reflection in higher
education” including the development of the teaching and assessing
of reflective learning (TARL) Model , and a systematic approach that
may be used to embed the pedagogy of reflective writing (EPC)
across courses in different disciplines in higher education.
The workshop will further explore the suite of pedagogical patterns
and accompanying resources for systematically teaching and
assessing reflective practice using existing exemplary teaching and
assessing practices, underpinned by the TARL and EPC models.

and discourse analysis. She led an Australian
Learning and Teaching Council competitive grant
