Inclusive Conversation Series with Mary Ryan Teaching and Assessing Reflective Writing Critical reflection is widely regarded as a valuable component of student learning in higher education. For example, reflection can play a role in enabling students to engage productively in their first year experience (FYE); to make connections between theory and practice in work-integrated learning (WIL); and once they leave university, to enhance their capacities for lifelong learning in their profession. Dr Ryan will share the findings and outputs of the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) project “Developing a systematic, cross faculty approach to teaching and assessing reflection in higher education” including the development of the teaching and assessing of reflective learning (TARL) Model , and a systematic approach that may be used to embed the pedagogy of reflective writing (EPC) across courses in different disciplines in higher education. The workshop will further explore the suite of pedagogical patterns and accompanying resources for systematically teaching and assessing reflective practice using existing exemplary teaching and assessing practices, underpinned by the TARL and EPC models. Associate Professor Mary Ryan Mary Ryan is an Associate Professor and Higher Degree Research Coordinator in the Faculty of Education at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. Her research is in the areas of reflective writing, reflexive learning and research, writing pedagogy and assessment, socio-spatial influences on learning and teaching and discourse analysis. She led an Australian Learning and Teaching Council competitive grant (2010/2011) focused on developing a researchbased approach to teaching and assessing reflection in higher education. This work resulted in conceptual models and strategies for reflective learning that have been embedded in universities across Australia, UK and Europe. She is the editor of a forthcoming book from this project Teaching reflective learning in higher education: A systematic approach using pedagogic patterns with Springer.
