Message from Mrs. Hamilton
In order to become a great leader you have to
be a great learner who is in control of your
destiny. This is what empowerment means
to me. Every student should strive for personal empowerment. When you are
empowered, you are in the driver’s seat for
your life – you possess the authority to do or
become what you want – you control you! A
good education helps you become empowered.
When you get knowledge with a good understanding no one can
take that knowledge away you. The reason why no one can take
it is because it is inside of you. Your character reflects who you
are and distinguishes you from others. Your actions reaffirm your
personal empowerment. You cheat yourself when you don’t want
to learn; when you don’t want to be empowered. Everyday
empower yourself by learning something new, using what you
have already learned and understanding that you have more to
learn. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “Our greatness lies not
so much in being able to remake the world…as in being able to
remake ourselves.” Empower yourselves Pumas!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!
Pumas celebrating birthdays in the month of
February are:

Seek first to understand, then to be understood. Why is this habit the key to
communication? It’s because the deepest
need of the human heart is to be understood. Everyone wants to be respected
and valued for who they are - a unique,
one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-cloned (at
least for now) individual.

Teen Business Challenge
By Roland Fletcher
On the weekend of February 20, three Legacy Prep Pumas, Jalen Brown, Kayla Hardy and myself (Roland
Fletcher), were selected to be a part of the Teen Business Challenge that took place at the Microsoft building. We
were placed on teams . There were four teams with five members. The names for the groups were red, yellow,
blue, and green. Jalen was on the yellow team, Kayla was on the blue team, and I was on the red team. Each team
had to work together to come up with a product that can solve a problem in peoples’ everyday lives. We had to
pitch it to the judges. You must use your teammates’ strengths to better your product. You’re also graded on how
you present your product; you must hit every key point to receive an excellent grade. The winner of the
competition was the green team . Even though my team didn’t win,. it was a great experience to be apart of the
Teen Business Challenge. I encourage you to apply.
Black History Month
By Jalen Brown
Black History is very important. The first reason it is important is because it gives youth a knowledge
about our forefathers and how they helped make this nation great. I think Dr. Carter G. Woodson had a
wonderful idea because we deserve to know about those that paved the way for us today. From the
abolitionists Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass to the civil right activists Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. and Rosa Parks, American history is filled with many great black leaders. Black History should be
taught more in classrooms so students can learn about the many accomplishments of Black Americans.
It will help change the future in a positive way.
Campus Buzz: Intramurals
By Jalen Brown
The Pumas are on a roll. The team is currently 11-0. Everyone has contributed with over 100
points during the whole season. Michael Austin, the starting quarterback, has over 26 passing
touchdowns. Roland Fletcher
leads with the most receiving
touchdowns and Daunte Harris
has the most rushing touchdowns this season. When the
Pumas played New Springs
they had a terrific game as
usual. The highlight of the game
was the punt return Darrin
Harris took all the way to the
end zone. Hopefully the Pumas can continue to
strive through the season and
win during the playoffs.

FLORIDA BLUE KIDS RUNNING PROGRAM
By Demetris Harris
On Sunday February 22, 2015, Legacy Pumas along with the MLK Center participated in the Gasparilla Half-Marathon
sponsored by the Florida Blue Kids Running Program and Under Armour. After 12 weeks of training, we were ready.
When we arrived at the MLK gym (5:30 in the morning), we received the Under Armour running shoes promised to us.
We then rode buses to the meeting location on Bayshore Boulevard. Students from other City of Tampa Parks and
Recreation centers were also getting ready for the run. After arriving at Bayshore, we
received our running shirts and other gear. Before we began our 2-mile run, we put on
our running shirts and then cheered on the marathon runners. They had been running
before we arrived. When it was our time, we gathered on the pavement, heard the police
horn and started to run. By the time we got to the end of the race, everyone was exhausted and thirsty. The first three male participants from Legacy to cross the finish line
were Daunte Harris (1st), Devandre Robertson (2nd) and Jaiden Mitchell (3rd).The first
three female participants were Shadaya Waitress (1st), Ayanna Thomas (2nd) and
Stephanie Lundeen (3rd). We thank everyone that came out to cheer us on. Go Pumas!
