Dear Resident
Lincoln Christmas Market 1st-4th December 2016
Thurs 1st Midday-9.30pm – Fri 2nd 10am-9.30pm
Sat 3rd 10am-9.30pm – Sun 4th 10am-7pm
Information for Residents
This newsletter is for local residents and
businesses to help keep you as up-to-date as
possible about the plans for the 2016 Lincoln
Christmas Market. We appreciate your patience
during the build up and staging of the event, and
are pleased to provide information on the local
traffic and access arrangements that will be in
place. We also hope that you will join us at the
Christmas Market and enjoy the event.
New for 2016
Not only do we have around 200 stalls at
this year’s Christmas Market but we are also
welcoming a new layout within the Lawns area
and several new stallholders. Once again, our
main focus is to bring you local produce and
high quality stalls for you to enjoy. We have been
working with local businesses and again offering
discounts for local craft stalls to ensure that
maximum benefit is kept in the local economy.
Again, there will not be a one way system in place
this year. (This will only be implemented should
crowding mean it is necessary).
Traditional Opening Ceremony
Thursday evening is residents’ night and the
perfect way to get into the festive spirit is to go
to the official opening ceremony of the Lincoln
Christmas Market, which will take place on the
Cathedral steps, set against the illuminated
backdrop of the west front. The Mayor of Lincoln
will officially declare the market open at around
6.30pm, followed by a special Christmas blessing
delivered by the Dean of Lincoln Cathedral.
Access
The Christmas Market takes place in uphill
Lincoln and access to this area and its boundaries
will be restricted throughout the event. Full details
of the road closures and traffic restrictions can
be found further on in this leaflet. We appreciate
that local residents and businesses need to gain
access to their homes and premises during this
time, therefore access passes will be sent to
every residential household and are available
on request for businesses. Dedicated stewards
will try to help anyone with legitimate access
needs in the areas covered by road closures. In
some areas we will have to use ‘no waiting’ and
‘no loading’ traffic cones to ensure emergency
vehicles have access. Wherever possible, these
cones are placed in areas where residents
have driveways or access to nearby streets for
alternative parking. To keep market traffic out
of the area and prevent streets being used by
visitors for parking, we have both the Park and
Ride and Walk and Ride services in operation,
which all visitors and stall holders will be
encouraged to use.
Residents Access Passes
Every residential household within the market
area will receive a Resident Access Pass. You
will need to complete the details of your vehicle
and your qualifying residential address in order
to validate this pass. When hung from the rear
view mirror of your vehicle, and provided it is safe
to do so, this will allow access through some of
the road closures in the market area. Please note
the pass is an access pass, not a parking permit.
It allows access for you to reach legitimate offstreet parking areas and driveways, or legitimate
on-street parking that is not subject to existing
or temporary restrictions, such as double yellow
lines or ‘no waiting’ / ‘no loading’ cones.
To receive an additional access pass for second
cars with genuine access requirements please
bring proof of address in person to the Visitor
Information Centre in Castle Hill (Monday –
Saturday 10am – 5pm, Sunday 10.30am – 4pm)
and from the main reception at City Hall on
Beaumont Fee (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
9am – 5pm, Wednesday 10am- 5pm, Friday 9am4:30pm). Please bring proof of your qualifying
address.
Business Access Passes
The city council is working to minimise the
volume of traffic in the uphill area over the
market weekend, so business passes will not
be routinely distributed to business premises.
Businesses affected by traffic restrictions in the
market area are however entitled to apply for
a numbered business access pass for genuine
servicing needs and can do so at www.lincolnchristmasmarket.co.uk. All business passes will
be issued by the Events Team.
Contacting us during the market
If you have any comments or concerns during
the event please contact us on 01522 873400 so
that we can assist you or email LCMResident@
lincoln.gov.uk
Sunday 4th December
While the market closes to the public at 7pm,
due to the nature of the event stallholders will be
leaving the city after this time. We try to keep this
disruption to a minimum with a phased exit by
vehicles from the area.
A BIG thank you
City of Lincoln Council is aware that not everyone
enjoys or gets a direct benefit from the Christmas
Market and we could not have this amazing event
without the support of local people who can be
inconvenienced by this event. We want to say
thank you so much for complying with the various
restrictions - it is greatly appreciated. Your needs
are considered at every stage of our planning,
but we know we are unlikely to please all of the
people all of the time.
Christmas Market Park and Ride
Every year we put on a Park and Ride from
Lincolnshire showground, and advise all visitors
coming to the event to use it. This is to help ease
congestion on city centre roads. Therefore if you
do know someone planning to visit the market
who is not local to the area please do suggest
the Park and Ride. More detail including prices
and times can be found online at www.lincolnchristmasmarket.co.uk
What you think is important to us
We have listened to people’s comments over
the last couple of years and have made positive
changes to support local and traditional traders
and reduce the impact to residents of the
fairground and fast food outlets. To help us make
future Christmas markets spectacular, please
send us your suggestions and feedback to
[email protected] or write to Events
Team, DDES, City of Lincoln Council, City Hall,
Beaumont Fee, Lincoln, LN1 1DF.
If you have any questions please
call 01522 873400 or email
[email protected]
We hope you have a fabulous festive season, a
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
