PROMOTIING READING ON GUAM SINCE 1968
President’s Message
Hafa Adai!
Thank you for attending the general membership meeting on January
14, 2017. We extend our gratitude to
Leonora Balajadia for her meaningful technology literacy presentation.
Balajadia, Assistant Principal for Adacao Elementary School and GDOE
Technology Cadre Member, was able to
inspire GC-IRA members with innovative ideas and tools to create a positive
literacy experience in the classroom.
She shared valuable tech tools for
assessment, engagement, and analysis,
including the use of bitly, Quick Key,
Socrative, and EDpuzzle. There were
so many inspiring ideas! If you weren’t
able to attend the meeting, you can visit
our site at http://iraguam.blogspot.com
to view her technology presentation.
At IRA’s February 4 meeting, we will
be having our Read-A-Thon 2017 Kick
Off at George Washington High School.
Rose Castro, RAT 2017 Chairperson, has
a special treat for the audience, including
a performance by Marc LaPlante and the
Agana Heights Honor Choir who will be
singing the RAT theme song, “Read to
the Beat” and other favorite tunes. Other exciting presentations will be made
by IRA Board Members who attended
last year’s ILA Conference in Boston,
Massachusetts. Lois Gumataotao, Dylan
Orot, and Evangeline ‘Vangie” Chaco
will be sharing meaningful literacy ideas
they gathered from the conference that
will surely motivate your students to gain
the disposition for the love of reading!
Do you like attending GC-IRA’s
general membership meetings? Do you
like promoting literacy? If so, the local council would like you to consider
becoming the next President-Elect for
Council Year 2017-2018. For more
information, please feel free to contact
me or Rose Castro. We would be more
than happy to talk to you about becoming the next GC-IRA President- Elect.
Remember that GC-IRA members
still have an opportunity to qualify for
the random drawing in May for an allexpense paid trip to the 62nd
Annual International Literacy Association Conference to be held from
July 15-17, 2017 in Orlando, Florida.

Si Yu’os Ma’ase’, and I look forward to
seeing you soon at our RAT 2017 KickOff!
