Welcome to the First Annual American
Revolution Presentation.
Unrest In the colonies
• 1752- British and Iroquois talked about lands
to the west of New York. The British wanted
to clear the air and make Iroquois their allies.
• French claimed land west of the Appalachian
Mountians previously.
• French built Fort Duquesne and several others
• This would lead to war.
Lasted 9 years
1754- British sent George Washington
and army to take over Fort Duquesne.
War broke out between Great Britain
and French

The British Preparing for War
British wanted to drive the French back to Canada. They planned to capture Fort
Duquesne and Fort Niagara.
British worried that Iroquois Confederacy would join the French so William
Johnson asked that the Iroquois take sides and stay on the British side.
The British leader was

• 1755- British troops captured Fort Niagara and
Fort Ticonderoga.
• 1759- British soldiers captured Quebec.
• The War was over…..Great Britain won.

Conflicting Loyalties
• After the war, British started moving west of
the Appalachian Mountains.
• This upset many Native Americans.
• To prevent fighting the British Gov’t. drew a
line between the colonies and the Native
American territory.
• This angered many settlers.
Patriots Fight Back
The French and Indian War cost Great Britain a lot of
money.
The British Gov’t. thought colonists should help pay.
British decided to make the colonists pay taxes on
certain goods.
• THE STAMP ACT!!! Placed taxes on items like
newpapers and pamphlets.
• Colonists were angered!!!!! Patriots were
colonists who were against British rule.
Loyalists were people who remained loyal to
Britain.
Tale of Two Tea Parties
Boston Harbor- 1773
• Colonists were angry
because of the tax on tea.
• They disguised themselves
as Mohawks, colonists
boarded a ship and dumped
342 chests of tea into
Boston Harbor.
• THE BOSTON TEA PARTY
New York Harbor- 1774
• Patriots in NYC followed
Boston’s lead.
• 18 boxes of tea were
dumped into New York
Harbor.
Colonists Make a Stand!!!
§ 1775- many colonists had joined a colonial militia.
§ Many people in the militias did not like British
rule.
§ British found out where the militia had stored
their weapons in Concord, Massachusetts. They
took a march to go take them.
§ The militia quickly gathered near by at Lexington
to stop the British.
§ British began to drive the militia away.
§ The SHOT HEARD AROUND THE WORLD was
fired…..just one single shot……..this began the
AMERICAN REVOLUTION
Ethan Allen was a militia leader.
May 10, 1775Allen and his men,
attacked Fort
Ticonderoga.
They quickly took over
the fort.
Cannons that were
gathered at Ticonderoga
helped assist the Patriots
win other battles.
They had a declaration of
independence
Leading to The Declaration of
Independence
• 1775- colonial leaders gathered in
Philadelphia.
• The meeting was called the Continental
Congress.
• 1776- Continental Congress agreed they
should be free from British rule.
John Jay
He was asked to write many congressional papers. These included
letters to the British government asking them to stop the fighting.
Thomas Jefferson
He was asked to write a statement explaining the decision of the colonies becoming
independent from British rule.
This statement is known as the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE!!
Independence Day.
• July 4, 1776- Continental
Congress approved the
Declaration.
• This day is now
celebrated as
Independence Day.
• George Washington
brought the official copy
to the troops.
• That evening, excited
Patriots tore down a
statue of British King
George III.
New York Gets the News……
• Metal was melted
down to make bullets
to use against the
British.
• Problems between
the colonists and the
British grew worse
and worse.
• Colonists began to
fight a war for
independence…………
