Native Americans in Philanthropy was founded in 1990 as a national nonprofit membership
organization whose mission is to engage Native and non-Native peoples in understanding and
advancing the role of philanthropy through practices that support Native values for current and future
generations.
The Louis T. Delgado Distinquished Grantmaker Award was established in honor of Board Member
emeritus Louis T. Delgado. Mr. Delgado currently serves as an independent consultant to foundations
and nonprofit organizations. The Award was established in recognition of the tenacity and power that
Mr. Delgado has brought to the field of philanthropy and his commitment to bridging knowledge
between philanthropy and Native communities.

Native Americans in Philanthropy invites nominations for the
Louis T. Delgado Distinguished Grantmaker Award
The essence of Native cultures is manifested through acts of giving. As an expression of their cultures
and in honoring the principle of generosity, Native peoples give to honor, celebrate, and show their
responsibility towards family members, friends and community. The nominee for the Louis T.
Delgado Distinguished Grantmaker Award must fulfill the criteria of understanding and
advancing the role of philanthropy between Native communities and mainstream philanthropy.

Criteria for the Nominee:

Native American individuals, tribe, foundations, or non-profit organization;
◊
Works toward the enhancement of Native communities;
◊
Cultivates an understanding between Native communities and mainstream philanthropy;
◊
Works to foster, facilitate and provide professional development in Native communities; and
◊
Encourages and facilitates philanthropic investment in Native communities.

Nominations are not accepted without completed forms, answers, bio and references. A scored
ranking process (1-100) is used to evaluate the nominees. Past awardees, close affiliates of Louis
Delgado and Ingrid Washinawatok, and Board members review nominations. The Board of
Directors ratifies final approval of selected awardees. Awards are presented at the Annual Meeting
of Native Americans in Philanthropy. In addition, a monetary contribution is made to the
organization of the awardees choice.
