Active Minds on Campus

Mental Health
Awareness Bracelets
Special thanks to Active
Minds at UCLA for helping
us create this fundraising
guide!
This campaign helped the UCLA chapter increase group bonding, raise awareness and funds on their campus, and most
importantly, it gave support to those that needed it! Chapter members made mental health awareness bracelets together
as a bonding activity and allowed students to purchase them at each of their events and through an online ordering form.
Follow this guide to replicate the success of the iSupport bracelet campaign. Learn more in the Program Bank.

Description
Step 1: Think logistics
 Who will make them?
 How will we package them?
 Where will we sell them?
 What colors are there?
o You can start small by making green bracelets for general mental health awareness.
You can add in other colors once you have more volunteers to help make them!
o Listed below are the nationally-recognized colors for each mental illness:
Red- Substance Abuse Awareness
Orange- Self Harm Awareness
Yellow- Suicide Prevention Awareness
Bright Green- Bipolar Disorder Awareness
Green- Depression Awareness/general mental health awareness
Teal- Anxiety Disorder Awareness (includes: PTSD, OCD, GAD, panic disorders, phobias)
Purple- ADHD Awareness
Periwinkle- Eating Disorder Awareness
Pink- Personality Disorder Awareness

Step 2: Plan tabling and/or events
 Line up some events where you can have a table and display the bracelets. Be mindful that
you may have to ask your university if you are allowed to sell merchandise at certain events.
Sometimes, universities will not allow vendors!
Step 3: Make them
 There are two links included below to some easy bracelet designs. These are not the only
ones, though. Search YouTube for “beginner bracelet tutorial” and you can find many
helpful videos to expand your campaign!

 Have a Bracelet-Making Social at your next meeting! This encourages members to bond
with one another while also helping your chapter raise money.

Step 4: Advertise, Advertise, Advertise
 Flyers—Make a flyer advertising your campaign! Here’s a sample of what has
worked for Active Minds at UCLA:
 Posters—A colorful poster, with a key explaining what each color represents,
draws people in and (a) lets them know what the campaign is right off the bat
and (b) educates students about mental health.

Step 6: Sell them
 Packaging—Design a card to attach each bracelet to in order to show off your
finished products—this is what you’ll attach the bracelet to before delivering it
to your customers. Plan on something about the size of a bookmark and print on
cardstock, if possible—be sure to include the Active Minds logo, your school’s
logo and a mental illness fact to continue spreading awareness. Here are some
facts that Active Minds at UCLA has used:
o Substance Abuse: Each day, about 1,350 persons abuse prescription pain
relievers for the first time (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration)
o Suicide Prevention: Suicide is the second leading cause of death in
individuals ages 15-24. In the U.S. someone dies by suicide every 12.8
minutes (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention)
o Eating Disorders: The mortality rate associated with Anorexia Nervosa is 12
times higher than the death rate associated with all other causes of death
for females 15-24 years old. (ANAD.org)
o Schizophrenia: People with schizophrenia are not violent, they are more
likely to be victims of violence (Neomed.edu)
 Decide as a group the cost of each bracelet. We recommend $1-3 for small
bracelets and $5-10 for more intricate ones. Price depends on demand at your
school, so feel free to adjust accordingly. Remember, all of the money is going
towards a good cause, so feel free to price your bracelets one or two dollars
more than you would expect!
