Some passages are hard to understand the first time. • Try to visualize, or picture, the events that are happening. Questions to Help Clarify Title 1. Does the title signify something about the story? Does it point to a truth the story reveals about life? Plot 2. What is the internal and external conflict? 3. What happens at the end of the story and what causes that to happen? 4. What is the author trying to say about feuding? Character Motivation 5. Do the main characters change during the course of the story? (dynamic) Do the main characters realize something they did not know before? Responses (with Examples from the Story) 6. Are any important statements about life or people made in the story, either by the narrator or characters in the story? Setting 7. What is the setting? (weather, sights, sounds, etc.) 8. Are the characters in conflict with the setting? What do the characters want? Does the setting keep them from getting what they want? 9. Think about the woods and the storm. The men make great plans, but they die because of nature. How would you state the author’s message? Theme 10. Is the theme ever directly stated? If so, where is it stated? 11. In one sentence, state the story’s theme.
