Dear Sisters and Brothers
“Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: to God who is, who was, and
who is to come.” Rev. 1:8.
Our celebration of the Holy Trinity focuses our
attention on God’s relationship with humanity. We may first think about God as
creator and as the one who promises and gives us Eternal Life. Today we want to
look more deeply into what we believe about God who has created us and promised
us Eternal Life. We hear from God’s Word how God wants to be in relationship with
us. What sort of relationship does God want with His people? How does God look at
us? How might we respond and look at God?
How did God reveal himself to Moses? Moses might have expected an
awesome lawgiver but he was met by the Great Lover. The people with Moses may
have identified God with terrifying sounds, clouds, smoke, fire and earth- quakes.
God’s self-description, God’s explanations of divinity, emphasized the tender
parental qualities of patience, forgiveness and fidelity. God’s law is a law that
‘refreshes the soul. God draws a wandering people away from sin with ‘bands of
love’. God is not a fearful tyrant.
Each time we celebrate the Eucharist we are greeted with St. Paul’s words
or similar words. We are greeted as people who are embraced by God who is Father,
Son and Holy Spirit. We come as people of faith who believe that our faith is a gift
from God, a ‘grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ’. Paul wants us to grow in our
knowledge of ‘the love of God’ and our belief in God’s love for us. Through that
knowledge and belief, St. Paul wants us to experience God’s love in our communal
life. St. Paul prays that we enjoy the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. He wants us to
experience as best humanly possible the love that is within the Trinity, in God’s very
self. This is a love that is total and everlasting.
In the Gospel today, Jesus describes God as the one whose excess of love
cannot be adequately expressed without sending the Son to give that love flesh, to
incarnate that love. Instead of God being portrayed as the judge, in Jesus’ view, God
offers human beings to take on the role of judging whether the offer from God is
worthwhile giving themselves over to God wholeheartedly. As Jesus speaks to
Nicodemus, he teaches him and us, that God is love, offers only love and has sent his
Son to lead us to love. This is not a feast to simply study, this is a celebration for
lovers. It is God who invites us. ‘God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and
abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.’ Ex. 34:6.
Sincerely, Fr. Ed

Stewardship
“For God so loved the world that He gave His
only Son…” John 3:16
Is your love conditional? Is there a price others have
to pay to receive your love? Are you generous with
your time, money and possessions? If you give
someone something, do you expect something in
return? Do you give your time freely or do you “fit
it in” when it’s convenient for you? Pray for a
grateful and generous heart.

The editor Abbot Peter Novecosky stated it was
not an easy decision to terminate the Messenger.
The history extends back to 1923 when the
English Messenger was started. The apostolate
of the press goes back even further to 1904, when
the German newspaper, the St. Peter’s Bote, was
first published; the first year it was edited in
Rosthern and printed in Winnipeg.

The Government of Canada has launched a Famine Relief Fund to respond to the severe food crisis in northeast Nigeria,
Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen, as well as other affected countries in Africa.
This particular humanitarian crisis stems from a conjunction of events that include armed conflicts coupled with severe droughts brought
about by climate change. Many have fled their homes and land to escape the violence of armed conflict and are continually displaced.
These issues make transportation and access to food extremely difficult. Development and Peace is present in the region and working
closely with local partners to respond to this humanitarian crisis threatening the lives of 20 millions of people. Since February,
Development and Peace has released $250,000 in funds for emergency food assistance to support its partners in South Sudan,
northeastern Nigeria and Somalia
For every eligible donation made by individual Canadians to registered Canadian charities, such as Development and Peace between
March 17 and June 30, 2017, the Government of Canada will contribute an equivalent amount to the Famine Relief Fund.
