Summer assignments - French 3 Honors (2016-2017)
"Mais, Madame…pourquoi?!"
My primary goal in assigning summer work for French class is that you have a way to practice your French, keep it fresh over summer
and maybe even learn a few new things. One of the biggest challenges for all students is getting back into "French mode" after such a
long vacation period. Much of what you learned has gone unused and you risk forgetting a lot of what you worked so hard to learn.
Therefore, contrary to what you might believe, I am not trying to ruin your vacation, but rather I am trying to make your transition into
the next level of French easier. 
What I am asking of you during the summer break is the following:
1.
2.
Take your time reading the book assigned to you. Remember that you have a very thorough glossary at the end of the book.
You don't need to look up every single word unless you feel it will impede your comprehension of the story. The more you
read, the quicker and more accurately you'll be able to infer the meaning of many unknown words.
You will find assigned questions for your readings starting mid to late June on your class Quia page (click here). If you are a
student I have not had previously, please follow the directions in the attached instructions sheet to create your own Quia
account. You must make your username your first and last name as one word with no punctuation or spaces in between (For
example: maybasse). Be careful when entering your email address in the registration process. It will be the only way for you
to retrieve your log-in information should you forget it. For all of my current students, your log-in information will remain
the same but you will need to add the class code to your account to access the summer reading assignments.
3. You will have two deadlines to complete the online work: July 20th and August 20th. The Quia activities will show the

due date in their titles so you know which to do by which deadline. The activities are not timed, you have unlimited attempts
and you have the ability to save your work and return to it later. You will have a quiz on the story when you return from
vacation.
On paper, note 10 new words you encountered and looked up for each chapter. Write an example sentence for each word
using the word in context.
Review the main verbs you learned in French 1 & 2 Honors. Know the meanings, uses and conjugations of these verbs in the
present tense, passé composé & imparfait. You can find many online practice websites to help you review. Review:
a. être
h. irregular -ir verbs
b. avoir
i. spelling-change verbs
c. faire
j. regular and irregular -re verbs
d. aller
k. venir and its related verbs
e. prendre
l. devoir, pouvoir & vouloir
f. boire
m. savoir & connaître
g. regular -er and -ir verbs
n. reflexive verbs
When you return from vacation, you will have a review conjugation test on k - n and general conjugation in the present
tense, passé composé and imparfait.
Review past vocabulary. Remember that everything builds on prior knowledge and this is especially true in a foreign
language class.
If you have any questions after carefully reading and following these instructions, or if you have any concerns, feel free to email me
([email protected]) and I will do my best to respond within 48 hours.
Bonnes vacances et bonne lecture!
