When the girls of a small Salem town are found dancing in
the woods, several succumb to a mysterious illness and the
sinister witch-finder Judge Danforth is called to investigate.
As neighbour turns against neighbour and secrets are
revealed, the girls form an unholy union that will shatter
Salem’s uneasy peace.
Girls from the age of ten to eighteen are busy rehearsing
whilst, backstage, pupils are hard at work designing and
making impressive set pieces to bring this arresting tale of
mass hysteria to life.
From intricate dance ensembles to austere Pilgrim dresses
our A level designers have also been creating one-of-a-kind
costumes for the cast.
“The rehearsals are going very well and everyone involved
either on stage or off is working incredibly hard to make this
a truly haunting production,” said Head of Creative &
Performing Arts Mr Ian Tutin who is directing the
production.
“’The Crucible’ is an enduring parable that warns against the
evils of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of
false accusations. It is an ambitious show and I’ve been so
impressed by the girls’ determination to get a handle on its
complexity. Our actresses have really got to grips with the
overwrought tension of Miller’s world and have flourished
throughout the rehearsal process.”
Tickets are available from main school reception and cost £7
or £5 for children. Reserve yours now by emailing
[email protected].
Recent school productions have included Into the Woods,
The Importance of Being Earnest, The Wizard of Oz, A
Midsummer Night’s Dream, & Oliver.

The Prep Library has been
full of budding bookworms
after school this week as the
girls chose their new favourite
reads at our annual Book Fair.
Every year the school’s library
transforms into a bookshop
jam-packed with titles our
teachers recommend for
pupils’ literacy development
and literary enjoyment.
The books are supplied
by Scholastic and the school
earns a commission from
every purchase which will be
spent on books for their Prep
Library. This year we took an
impressive £747.68.
A huge thank you to all the
families who joined in with
the fun. Happy reading!

The highest level of the institution’s internationally
recognised graded exams, Grade 8 challenges singers to
demonstrate an assured and confident level of musical
aptitude which includes proving their ability to sight-read,
performing five pieces to perfection and even singing a
chord after only hearing it twice.
Examiners also have a keen eye for a well-rounded
performer who has an instinct for story-telling and sings
with great feeling and emotion.
Savannah’s fantastic success follows an exciting year for the
young performer which has seen her receive five-star rave
reviews for her compelling performance in “If not now,
when?” at the St Ives September Festival as well as directing
and producing a sell-out production of ‘Matilda the Musical
in 20 minutes’ alongside fellow Sixth Form thespian
Eugenie Nevin. She is a key member of our Chamber
Choir and is playing a lead role in the school production of
“The Crucible”.
A real team player, Savannah frequently offers a helping
hand to many of our younger pupils at our various
performing arts clubs.

Jumping for joy in
Boarding
It was a weekend of non-stop
action in our boarding houses
as the girls put their best foot
forward and leapt into a
packed programme of
activities.
Saturday saw our songstresses
singing their hearts out as
Dalvenie lounge was
transformed into a karaoke
club (complete with disco
ball!) while on Sunday many
wrapped up warm and
enjoyed a bracing dog walk
along the windy cliff paths
between Porthtowan and
Chapel Porth.
The girls always love getting
their hearts racing so everyone
had a real spring in their step
as they jumped into their
sports gear and set off for a
highly anticipated bounce
around at Jump4 Trampoline
Park.
With 66 interconnecting
trampolines to choose from,
the evening really was a funfilled workout and the girls
had a fantastic time
negotiating the park’s angled
wall trampolines, foam pits,
and battle beams. The launch
deck proved a particularly big
hit with our thrill seekers
relishing the rush of jumping
from the top deck into the
massive airbags below.

Did you know? All vets have a specialism ranging from
general practice to areas such oncology, radiology, dentistry
& dermatology with many leading the way in veterinary
medical research rather than in a surgery.
Whilst for many veterinary medicine conjures images of
James Herriot roaming the Yorkshire dales, Veterinary
Surgeon Dr Marvin Firth gave our aspiring medics a real
insight into the modern face of a specialist practice which
isn’t only changing how we help our furry friends but
revolutionising medical treatment for all species, including
our own.
Part of our Aspiring Medics Programme, the in-depth
Q&A offered girls a fascinating view of a rich and varied
career which, for Dr Firth, ranges from research into equine
reproduction to dog acupuncture. The girls were intrigued
to learn more about the incredible world of little-known
specialisms such as poultry medicine and find out more
about the packed day-to-day schedule of a vet on call.
When he’s not treating the country’s top thoroughbreds and
promoting horse welfare with County Equine, Dr Firth
spends his time at his Belgravia Canine Chiropractic and
Acupuncture Clinic helping beloved (and often elderly)
family pets get back on their feet without the use of
traditional Western medicine.
The outing was particularly
special for Year 9 Emilia who
was jumping for joy at turning
14 last Friday. Happy Birthday
Emilia!

Ex-international joins
our football coaching
team
Former international football
player and Prep 6 parent, Keith
O’Neill was cheering our young
footballers on yesterday ahead
of joining the girls for specialist
training sessions later in the
term.
As well as representing the
Republic of Ireland, over the
course of his career Keith has
played for top clubs such as
Norwich, Middlesbrough and
Coventry City.
With a wealth of experience and
expertise, Keith had plenty of
tactical tips and words of
encouragement to offer from the
sidelines. The footballer was
extremely impressed by the
team’s skilful game play which
saw them storm to a 4-1 victory
against Penrice School.
Over the course of the term,
Keith will be working with our
Year 7, 8 & 9 players to help
improve their performance on
the pitch and, hopefully, go all
the way to the top.
Undefeated in all their
competitive matches this season,
football coach Mr Mothersole
has high hopes for the fledgling
team and can’t wait to see them
continue to flourish with the
under Keith’s expert guidance.

With experience working in some of the top private
practices and universities in the US and Europe, the girls
took away lots of notes crammed with Dr Firth’s helpful
advice on university applications and finding the medical
career that works for you.
Our Aspiring Medics Programme aims to support those
pupils with career aspirations in the fields of medicine,
dentistry and veterinary science. Through a tailored
calendar of lectures, workshops, mentoring and one-to-one
support from experts in the field, we aim to best prepare
our pupils to pursue their career aspirations and gain places
on their chosen university courses.
Sixth Form markswoman
steals the show at
Cornwall County Open
Sixth Form markswoman Alice Wilson stole the show at
Cornwall County Open Shooting Championships last
weekend winning all the junior and senior titles in the twoday competition.
Against tough competition from the top shooters in the
South West, Alice stormed to victory taking the overall
county open title, ladies title and the Under 21 title.
She also won the pairs championship with her shooting
partner David Husband and led the St Austell Rifle team to
victory in the team championship.
Undefeated by shooters who came from as far afield as
Bristol and Southampton, the Sixth Former scored an
impressive 568/600 in the open championship. Her nearest
rival scored 541.

annual Michaelmas Family Ski
Trip 2017/18 will now be

Year in the fabulous Austrian
resort of Tyrol.
Announced today, the trip will
take place from Wednesday 27
December – Tuesday 2
January enabling our skiers to
enjoy their creature comforts
at home for Christmas itself.
Salzburger/Sportswelt lies
right at the centre of the
enormous Ski Amade region,
comprising of ten resorts.
These are interconnected by a
new state-of-the-art lift
system allowing skiers to
freely explore the 350kms of
piste which cater to a wide
range of abilities making it a
perfect location for the whole
family to enjoy the slopes.

coach transfers in the UK and
Austria, 6 night’s
accommodation and full
board in a traditional Austrian
family-run hotel, ski, boot,
pole and helmet hire and lift
pass. Ski instruction, travel
insurance and evening
entertainment are not

The victory was particularly sweet for Alice who last year
narrowly missed out on the overall Open title by one point
due to a misfire in the last round.
A just reward for her hard work, she proudly headed home
with an impressive haul of prizes that included eight gold
medals and four perpetual trophies.
Alice’s impressive win follows a fantastic year for the young
markswoman which has seen her take home gold at her first
international shooting competition and be selected to
compete with a national shooting squad. She now holds the
County title, South West regional title and the Welsh Open
title for rifle shooting.
Later this month, Alice hopes to add another title to her
collection as she takes on challengers of all ages in one of
the country’s largest shooting events: the British Open
Championship.
Alice's father, Andrew Wilson, said: “We are so impressed
by the phenomenal progress Alice has made over the last
two years. She is an incredibly dedicated and ambitious
sportswoman and, with the support of a sponsor to help
her get to the top, selection for the 2018 Commonwealth
Games and 2020 Tokyo Olympics is becoming an
increasingly real possibility. We couldn’t be more proud.”
Alice is on the lookout for further sponsorship support as
she drives towards her ultimate ambition of representing
Team GB at the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.
The price of the trip is £899
(full paying adult), £799
(Under 17 yrs) & £759 (Under

Artists in residence
With their first impressive
collection of paintings
hanging in our Prep School
gallery, our Prep 5 & 6 artists
are now busy creating their
next creative masterpieces as
they take up residence in the
senior school art room.
The girls are feeling
particularly inspired as last
month they got the surprise
of their lives when a letter to
internationally renowned artist
Christine McArthur resulted
in them receiving an original
piece of artwork.
Prep School art teacher Miss
Helen Mills said: “The
Thackeray Gallery,
Kensington kindly sent the
girls’ work to Christine
McArthur and I could hardly
believe my eyes when, a few
weeks later, a reply came in
the post. Not only that, but
when I opened the letter, the
contents were better than
anything we could ever have
hoped for.”
Christine was so impressed by
our young artists’ take on her
striking winter paintings that
she sent them an original
piece entitled ‘Miro’s
Pinecones’. The artist praised
the girls’ “beautiful” work
remarking that it is “so much
better than” hers!
Celebrate our pupils’
creativity at the Lander
Gallery
Join us to celebrate the talent of our young local artists at
the Grand Opening of the Combined Truro Schools Art
exhibition on Thursday 9 March.
The exhibition follows a series of workshops in which
Truro High artists joined pupils from five other schools
from the Truro area to work with professional artists
exploring their creative flair and creating stunning pieces of
artwork.
These have ranged from photosensitive etching with
Penryn Print Studios to a ceramics workshop with local
artist Russell O’Connor. This jam-packed programme will
culminate with an intensive one-day dance workshop at
Truro High. This year the project has chosen to explore contemporary
Cornish Art. The Grand Opening will commence with a
piece of interpretative dance created in this final workshop.
The Combined Truro Schools Art exhibition at the Lander
Gallery in Lemon Street, Truro, will run from Thursday 9
March until Tuesday 14 March.
The piece will now be taking
pride of place in the Prep
School to get everyone feeling
suitably inspired.
