WEEK #1
Monday, August 22nd:
1.
Vacation Spots Introduction
2.
Hand out first day folders with the following:
a. Rules, class procedures, supplies and policy sheet
b. SSR guidelines
c. Extra Credit opportunities for the first nine-week period.
d. Senior project for semester exams
3.
LCD projector to show acceptable use for electronics and for Remind 101.
4.
Vocabulary beginner: word parts or morphemes; go over words and
definitions – test on Friday.
5.
If time permits, begin the Introduction to British Literature with AngloSaxon Period:
a. You tube video
b. Textbook pages 23-27
HW: Supplies due by Friday; test over six terms on Friday
Tuesday, August 23rd:
1.
Complete intro. to class.
2.
Finish introduction to Anglo-Saxon Period.
3.
Content vocabulary (smart board activity): epic, epic hero, kennings,
alliteration, archetypes, caesura, and purpose (pages 38-41 in textbook); students
copy definitions into their spirals; then, they will draw anchor charts in their
spirals and we will add descriptions/examples as we read our first piece of
literature, Beowulf.
4.
Handouts: “What is a Hero?” and “How to identify a Hero?” Plus, hand out
the Kennings worksheet to be filled in as we study the literature.
5.
Finally, hand out the study questions for Beowulf.
Wednesday, August 24th:
1.
Journal sponge: Why do we write? What is the purpose? Why do you think a
piece of literature like Beowulf was written? What is the purpose of it?
2.
Finish activities from yesterday.
3.
Discuss the purpose of anchor charts with the students.
4.
Begin Beowulf, stopping to discuss, answer questions, and add words to our
anchor charts.
Thursday, August 25th:
1.
Vocabulary review over morphemes.
2.
Continue with Beowulf, stopping to answer questions, discuss, and fill out
anchor charts.
HW: Test over the words tomorrow
Friday, August 26th:
1.
Test over morphemes.

WEEK #2
Monday, August 29th:
1.
Using the Vocabulary Strategies learned in my workshop, introduce the first
ten vocabulary words to students using the following steps:
a. Explain and describe the term but do not define.
b. Students use their own words to define each term.
c. Students draw a picture(s) to represent the term.
d. Play free association with the words as the first learning activity.
3.
Continue with Beowulf. Students need to be listening, filling out their
anchor charts, and answering their study questions together as a class.
Tuesday, August 30th:
1.
Complete vocabulary activities from yesterday.
2.
Continue with Beowulf, discussing battle of good vs. evil, biblical allusions,
anchor charts, and answering study questions.
Wednesday, August 31st:
1.
Grammar sponge: Correcting sentence run-ons and fragments. Students
will receive another student paragraph and will need to correct the paragraph and
say why.
2.
Continue with Beowulf. Continue discussing, filling in anchor charts, and
answering study questions.
Thursday, September 1st:
1.
Finish Beowulf and all activities that go along with it, including the anchor
charts and study questions.
2.
Final discuss and review for the test over Beowulf.
HW: Test over Beowulf is tomorrow
Friday, September 2nd:
1.
Test over Beowulf, including the short answer questions which should be
answered as if it were a STARR Open-ended response question.
2.
Vocabulary activity with first ten words: Odd One Out.
3.
If time remains, SSR.

will type the essay in the lab on that day.

Work on the rough draft for the rest of the period.

Computer lab to begin college applications online at www.applytexas.org.
Thursday, September 8th:

Vocabulary review for all terms:
a. Word association with them all.
b. Vocabulary pyramid with them all.

Study words with a partner for the remainder of the period.

Friday, September 9th:

WEEK #4:
Monday, September 12th:
1.Set #3 of vocabulary words:
a. Explain and describe the term but do not define.
b. Students use their own words to define each term.
c. Students draw a picture(s) to represent the term.
2.Journal: Does fate control our lives? Use five vocabulary words from weeks #1
and 2 in your journal.
3.
Background on Medieval Literature (pages 140-141 in the textbook).
Discuss content vocabulary: ballad, medieval romance, allegory, a moral tale,
irony, and characterization. Students take notes over the terms and play card sort
game to see what they know about the terminology already.
4.
Background on Geoffrey Chaucer ( pages 142-143 in the textbook); five
minutes/five facts.
5.
Hand out genre, chronology, purpose, list of characters, and character
analysis assignment. Begin going through each of these together.
Tuesday, September 13th:
1.
Finish activities from yesterday.
2.
Complete introduction to Medieval times, Chaucer, and The Canterbury
Tales.
3.
Begin “The Prologue.” Listen, but stop frequently to discuss the different
elements, making sure to add to our anchor charts.
4.
Discuss and do the first character analysis together. Students will do two
more on their own.
Wednesday, September 14th:
1.
What characteristics does a person of good character possess? Use five
vocabulary words from this week’s words in your journal.
2.
Continue with “The Prologue.” Listen to it and stop to discuss each character
described in detail. Students need to be working on their character analysis as we
listen.
Thursday, September 15th:
1.
Review this week’s words using 3 Way Match.
2.
Continue with “The Prologue.”
Friday, September 16th:

HW: College Essay #1 Rough draft is due on Monday of next week.
WEEK #5
Monday, September 19th:
*Computer lab to type up first college essay – single space so that it can be used
on ApplyTexas.org. Hand in essay tomorrow.

4. Answer the critical thinking skills over this tale.

Assign creative writing assignment for The Canterbury Tales. Students need
to create their own tale following the same pattern as Chaucer – using allegory,
irony, etc… using a moral or message in the story as well.
3.
Students will begin writing today.

WEEK #6:
Monday, September 26th:
1.
Students will do set #5 of their vocabulary.

c. Students draw a picture(s) to represent the term.

Read “The Wife of Bath Tale” on pages 184-196 and do the journals for the
ongoing assignment while reading. The journals will make text to text
connections as well as analyze the piece of literature for irony and other relevant
literary devices.
3.
Stop and discuss as we listen to the tale.
Tuesday, September 27th:
1.
Finish “The Wife of Bath Tale” on pages 184-196 and complete the journals
with it.
2.
Finish writing your creative tale. The tale will be typed up tomorrow in the
computer lab.
Wednesday, September 28th:

Review set 5 of vocabulary using Bluff.
1.
Share tales and hand them in.

Introduction to Giovanni Boccacio (pages 206-207) – five minutes/five

literature that we read and studied in class: The Canterbury Tales, “Federigo’s
Falcon,” or “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.”
a. Get into groups of four or five people.
b. Get an explanation sheet and begin planning for the
project.
Wednesday, October 5th :

Final review for vocabulary sets 5 and 6 using vocab charades.

Week #8:
Monday, October 10th – Thursday, October 13th:
 Students are going to be doing an entire four days of college preparedness.
On the 13th I am going to show them the goingtocollege website. Students
will go there and do the steps. If they aren’t going to college, they must fill
out a job application. If they are going into the military, they must go to
military.com
 On Tuesday and Wednesday, students will be working on ApplyTexas.org,
typing an essay for a college – even if they aren’t going to one.
 On Thursday, we will be back in the classroom to share everything we have
done and learned about future goals and things we must do to get the
future we want.
Friday, October 14th:
SSR: Student choice
Week #9
Monday, October 17th:
1.
Complete anything necessary for ApplyTexas.org
2.
Second college essay assigned: rough draft will be due next Monday,
October 26th.
3.
Spend the rest of the period writing.
Tuesday, October 18th:

Introduction to Renaissance Poetry Unit:

c. Poetry notebook requirements

Begin with “Passionate Shepherd…” and “The Nymph’s Reply.”

Wednesday, October 19th:

Complete the activities over the poems from yesterday.

Create your own ballad assignment.

Students will work on this all period after the teacher models an example.

Complete the ballad assignment.

Write a final copy on construction paper and hand in; share some.
HW: Your second college essay will be due (rough draft only) by next Monday.
