YOUR FIRST STOP TO SUMMER FUN
Summer Activity
COLORING
CUBES
Make rainy days cool with an afternoon
of ice cube art!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
• Food coloring, assorted colors
• Ice cube trays (fun shapes are optional)
• Small plastic cups to mix food coloring
with water
• Small straws, popsicle sticks or lollipop sticks
• A few sheets of white paper
• Old newspaper or a plastic tablecloth
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Put a few drops of the food coloring into a small plastic cup with enough water to fill one cube section of the
tray, then mix. Repeat for each color of your palette. Follow the color mixing suggestions on the food coloring
box for a fun palette.
2. Pour your mixtures of water and food coloring into the ice cube tray, then place the tray in the freezer. After
about 50 minutes in the freezer, before the cubes are completely frozen, place some small straws (or popsicle
sticks or lollipop sticks) in some of the cubes to be used as handles.
3. Keep the ice cube trays in the freezer for a few hours until they have hardened.
4. Set up the area where you intend to paint with some old newspapers or a plastic tablecloth to protect your
painting surface.
5. Remove the ice cube trays from the freezer, place them on your painting surface, get out your sheets of white
paper canvases and begin to paint with the ice cubes!
6. When the kids have completed their cool masterpieces, leave them flat to dry.
