Dr. David A. Anderson
Associate Professor of Archaeology, University of
Wisconsin-La Crosse, Department of Archaeology and
Anthropology
David A. Anderson
Dr. Anderson’s research focuses on the
Predynastic and Early Dynastic periods and
the formation of the Egyptian state. He is an
archaeologist with over 30 years experience
conducting archaeological research in the
eastern United States and Middle East on
both prehistoric and historic sites. He is the
director of the El-Mahâsna Archaeological
Project, which is investigating the formation
of the ancient Egyptian centralized state and
the origins of Egyptian religion and divine
kingship. Dr. Anderson specializes in the
integration of computers and archaeology,
utilizing
3D
capture,
CADD,
GIS,
geophysical
sensing
and
database
management to facilitate collection and
analysis of field results.
In the fall of 2000, extensive excavations within the Predynastic
settlement at el-Mahâsna revealed typical domestic structures
of the period as well as the remains of what has been
interpreted as an early ritual structure. From deposits
associated with the structure, a substantial amount of faunal
remains were recovered which suggest cultic practices. Dr.
Anderson's lecture will present results of new analyses of these
materials to shed light on the nature and the timing of rituals
performed in the structure.

Leonard de Grassi 1928 – 2016
Sadly, we have learned that our friend Leonard
de Grassi passed away earlier this month. He
was a talented educator and art historian on the
faculty of Glendale Community College since
1962 and professor emeritus there since 1992.
Among myriad other accomplishments, Leonard
was a member of the Art Educators Association,
American Research Court Egypt. Some EEO/SC
members were lucky enough to attend his
excellent hieroglyphics classes, and we enjoyed
seeing him often at our lectures over the years.
We will very much miss Leonard, his friendship,
his brilliant mind and his love of Egyptian art.
After our Sept. 10 EEO/SC lecture in Sherman
Oaks, speaker Dr. Diana Craig Patch of the
Metropolitan Museum in New York converses
with members Bob Wickland (center) and Allan
Gluck (right). Dr. Patch’s talk explained the
fascinating history and symbolism of lapis lazuli,
including lots of photos of magnificent Egyptian
jewelry made from the deep-blue stone.
