A Springtime of Hope
WELCOME, NEW CHURCH MEMBERS! See Page 3.
Monsignor David Funk, Pastor
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Spring is here officially, and, in the spring, our greatest feast of
the Church occurs – the Paschal Mystery! Palm Sunday begins
the celebration of the Sacred Three Days: Holy Thursday, Good
Friday and Easter Sunday. On Palm Sunday, we hear about the
triumphal entry of Jesus into the city of Jerusalem. But the tone
turns somber as we listen to the first account of the passion and
the death of Jesus proclaimed. This day points ahead to Holy
Thursday, where Jesus celebrates his Last Supper, institutes the
memorial of his passion, death and resurrection in the Holy
Eucharist and then tells of his betrayal, Peter’s denial and the
scattering of the disciples. Then we move on to Good Friday,
where Jesus carries the burden of our sins and the consequence
of them, death when He is nailed on the cross of Calvary. The
Paschal Mystery, of course, does not stop at Mt. Calvary on
Good Friday. Death is not the end for Jesus. Three days later,
on Easter Sunday, He rose triumphant from death and raised us
up with him. No longer does sin and death have their hold on
us. A new creation, a new dawn, a new springtime has come to
pass for us. Easter gives us new hope!
In the light of this tremendous new springtime of hope, I, as
your pastor, share with you the joy of new life at St. Pius X.
After some delay, it brings great joy to announce that we have
a new principal for our elementary school, Mr. Darren Smith.
Darren has served as our vice-principal this year and, with the
approval of our search committee, was offered the position of
principal, which he has accepted. With Darren on board, we
can now move forward with the plans for our school, that were
enumerated during our capital campaign.
Further hope and joy has touched St. Pius X as well. We have
had such a tremendous response to the first phase of the Capital
Campaign “To Renew All Things in Christ.” Thus far, we have
over $2.8 million pledged toward our $3 million goal. We also
have over $1 million in-hand at the present time. With that said,
the Bishop has given the go-ahead to begin construction on the
rebuilding of Hohman Hall for the Latchkey and Youth Ministry
with the hope this construction will be finished for the opening
of this fall’s school year. The construction is slated to begin in
May 2017 before the end of the present school year.

SERVING HIS HOLINESS — His Holiness Pope Francis greets seminarian Robert Johnson (St. Pius X) prior
to vesting for Mass on the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, January 1, 2017, Vatican City, Italy. A
generous benefactor of the Pontifical College Josephinum funds an annual trip to Rome for men in their
third year of theological studies which includes the opportunity to serve Mass with the Holy Father on New
Year’s Day. The Pope greets each seminarian prior to Mass and, as a token of thanks, gives him a rosary. Knights of Columbus Fr. Andrew H. Hohman Council #5253 regularly supports seminarian Robert Johnson
and other men in the diocese preparing for the priesthood with funding and prayer. This includes providing
money to defray the cost of books and supplies for their education and sending Christmas cards that contain
words of encouragement and gift cards. The quarterly Pennies for Heaven collection taken at the doors of
our church raises $6,000-$7,000 each year, all of which is donated to support diocesan seminarians.

This is great news and, as the pledges are paid and the cash becomes available, we will
continue the build of Phase One. This could result in the social hall/family center and
additional rectory offices being completed in 2018. We would be almost a year ahead
of the schedule as originally thought.
Spring! The Paschal Mystery! The season of hope both in nature and in the Church!
Our Capital Campaign “To Renew All Things in Christ” here at St. Pius X! Our new
principal! These are great joyous signs for the parishioners of St. Pius X to celebrate and
to see how blessed we are by our God.

News from the Military Outreach Program
SPRING DRIVE
Many, many thanks to everyone who helped support our
parish’s recent effort to provide comfort items for our deployed
service members. This year we had 15 overseas service
members from St. Pius X, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, and the
VFW 9473. Through your generosity, along with the help
of St. Vincent de Paul Society and VFW Post 9473, we could
send goodie boxes to our soldiers and to our adoptee, the
USO Fenty at Jalalabad Airfield, Afghanistan. Your generosity
will really brighten the day for them! We were also able to
send an assortment of Girl Scout cookies to each one of the
15 deployed service members from St. Pius X, St. Elizabeth
Ann Seton and VFW 473, thanks to the support of our Brownie
and Girl Scout troops. In addition, we had two PSR classes
utilize our program as a Lenten service project. Please keep
our deployed military in your thoughts and prayers for a safe
journey back to their homes and their families. American flags at the Westerville Community Center at 350
North Cleveland Avenue, Westerville, Ohio. Events are
scheduled from May 26, 2017 through May 29, 2017. This is a
unique opportunity to honor your local heroes. Flags can be
dedicated or purchased in honor of your own personal hero
or you can take a couple of hours to walk through this free
event. For more information, go to www.fieldofheroes.org.

Turning Five in Summer
Should You Wait Another Year for Kindergarten?
Your child turns five between the months of May through
September and that exciting life-transition is reached: becoming
a kindergartener! But as one of the younger five-year-old children
entering kindergarten, would your son or daughter benefit from
another year in Pre-K? Much of the answer to this decision
depends less upon academic achievement and more upon your
child’s own ability to stay on task, follow verbal directions, sit
quietly for longer stretches, and exercise essential self-help skills.
“A little over half of our St. Pius X Children’s Center (SPXCC)
students with May-September birthdays wait a growing year
and re-enroll in Pre-K, beginning kindergarten as brand-new
six-year-olds,” says SPXCC Co-Director Mary Benedict. “A year
of development at this age is huge. Today’s kindergarten class is
not like that of the past. It involves a great deal of sitting, taking
timed tests, and completing worksheets. In general, it has much
higher and more rigorous academic demands. Is your child ready
for this as a young five-year-old? Your child’s Pre-K teacher can
and should be able to provide you with this professional counsel
if you face this decision.”
While kindergarten-readiness can certainly include the
knowledge of letters and numbers, other signs are less tangible
but just as important. These signs of kindergarten-readiness
include the ability to sit very still and listen to a story or a lesson
for up to 30 minutes; to separate well from parents with littleto-no crying; to self-adjust quickly after a disappointment or a
sharing issue; to cooperate with trusted adults and peers; and to
follow a two-or-three-part verbal direction. Self-help skills are
also essential to success.
What are self-help skills? They are the skills necessary to take
care of one’s own needs without another’s significant help. “One
of the most essential self-help skills in kindergarten is having the
ability to use the restroom without assistance,” added SPXCC
Co-Director Sharon Miller. “Beyond the obvious challenge of
trying to assist many students in the bathroom and still stay on
task with lesson plans, Ohio law mandates that elementary
school teachers are not permitted in student restrooms. A
kindergarten teacher is not legally permitted to help, so your
child must be able to do this on his or her own.” Basic skills
like dressing oneself for outdoor play – including the ability to
manage zippers and buttons when putting on a coat, hat, and
mittens – and following simple protocols for cleanliness in the
classroom – hanging up coats, throwing away trash, and pushing
in chairs – is important, too.

preschool or Pre-K class or to read more about this or other
helpful topics, please visit www.spxchildrenscenter.com or

Music Ministry: We Need You!
The Adult Choir is dwindling due to many life issues with our members.
We are hurting for new members, especially altos and basses, but we need
everybody! The need is great and I am in “begging-mode” with my request to
our parishioners. I am very proud and honored to be a part of St. Pius X’s choir,
which has established a standard of excellence for parish Catholic choirs.
I continue to work on practice options and other ways to make this choir more
time-friendly as we all have increasing demands on our time. Look for a special
message that will be sent to all parishioners who have signed up for e-mail from
St. Pius X in May, 2017.
Please let me know if you are interested. If you can sing the hymns, you can
sing with us. The relationships you will have with the other members are a lifelong benefit. Come and be a part of something very special. Please email me at
[email protected] or call me at 614-501-0104.
Thank you,
