Grade 1 News!
I hope all of you amazing mothers had a wonderful Mother’s day spent
exactly how you wanted! Thank you for all you do for your children!
Thank you as well to those of you who have sent in the swimming permission
forms and those who have volunteered to swim! We now have enough
volunteers, but if you’re interested in coming, we’ll gladly welcome you! The
more adults the better!
I’d like to also thank all who have donated towards the evacuees from Fort
McMurray. The school website has some information on ways you can help
and fundraising that the school is doing. As our school will already be
welcoming students from Fort McMurray, any extra school supplies you may
have lying around can be sent in and we will direct it to the new students
here as needed.
Have a great week!

Language Arts
Last week we began exploring another type of writing, persuasive! We
read the book “I Wanna Iguana” and students wrote a persuasive letter
trying to convince you to get them a pet of their choice! We will
continue with another persuasive writing piece coming up based on the
hilarious “Pigeon” books. We also started reading books by Eric Carle.
We will complete a few math and art activities based on his books.
Continuing to read nightly is important for your growing reader. I am
so excited to see how all of the students reading is improving. Reading
every day is crucial to building fluency and automaticity with sight
words along with being exposed to new words and practicing sounding
out and word patterns. Over the summer holidays, most students go
back a letter or two when reassessed in September. By pushing and
getting students as far as possible now, this will hopefully help
decrease any summer slide!
Math
We went out on the playground to do some measuring of the different parts
of the playground. We worked on our estimating skills and then checked to
see how close we were. Since we’re back to focusing on addition and
subtraction strategies, we reviewed what we already know by playing math
“yahtzee”! We also spent some time completing assignments on www.mathletics.com.
This website can be accessed from home and from a tablet. Along with completing
assignments based on Alberta curriculum, there is a section called “Live Mathletics”
where students can practice their basic facts. I am encouraging students to move onto
level two which has them adding and subtracting up to 20! If you don’t have your child’s
username and password please let me know and I will write it in the agenda.
This week we reviewed what makes an addition or subtraction story and used a
picture to make up some problems on our own!
Science and Social
It has been exciting to see our bean seeds sprout in the sprout houses,
along with many of the seeds we planted starting to grow! This week
we
continued using our observation skills to see what changes our seeds
and plants have made. We also looked at the life cycle of a bean plant,
and started becoming familiar with the parts of plants. We looked at
stems, roots, leaves, flowers, and fruits of plants. We will continue to
look at these plant parts and their uses and how people and animals can
use plants in our lives!
We’ve begun looking at the past and looking at changes that have
occurred through books and discussions. Look for an “Interview letter”
to come home. Students will interview an older family member or
friend to find out what life was like when they were a child compared
to what life is like now.
