Advancing the beneficial use of radioisotopes and ionizing radiation through informed public policies that save lives, create jobs, and keep our nation secure. Our Purpose The Source Security Working Group (SSWG) is a national alliance of trade associations, professional societies, and corporations who seek to ensure continued access to radiological sources. Radiation technologies are a critical, yet underappreciated, component of our modern economy: among their many uses, they provide cutting-edge cancer treatments, precise measurements of oil and gas reserves, aid in pipeline inspection, and sterilize medical devices and supplies. The SSWG will serve as a strong voice to protect the continued availability of radiological sources, ensuring our laws and policies are risk informed, science-based, and support the highest levels of public health and safety. SSWG members will have the opportunity to pursue a shared policy agenda for the radioisotope community through organized advocacy, regular meetings and conference calls, direct policy outreach, and issue-specific engagement. These strategies include direct contact with members of Congress and their staff, position letters to key policymakers, issue briefings, hearing testimony, grassroots efforts, and media outreach and events. Our Goals Promote public awareness about the use and benefits of medical and industrial uses of radioisotopes and radiation technologies. Conduct a comprehensive outreach campaign in U.S. Congress, federal agencies, and nongovernmental organizations to raise awareness of the societal benefits of radiation technologies. Advocate for federal and state policies that strike the appropriate balance between security and access concerns. Oppose policy proposals that would needlessly restrict the public’s access to lifesaving technologies enabled by radiological sources. How to Join This Effort Any organization that agrees to support the goals of the SSWG may become an Affiliate Member. The SSWG is also forming a Steering Committee, comprised of stakeholder organizations that pledge financial support to advance the group’s mission. These organizations will then appoint individuals as Co-Chairs who will be responsible for setting its agenda and leading its advocacy strategy. Benefits of Joining the Steering Committee A Seat at the Table: Members of the Steering Committee will have a leading voice in setting the agenda for the SSWG and will have input into the groups key strategy decisions. Strong Coalition Advocacy: By joining the Steering Committee, members will have the opportunity to be actively engaged in developing and advancing a comprehensive advocacy agenda for the SSWG. Professional Support Staff: The funding provided by members of the Steering Committee will support a professional staff to advance the goals of the SSWG. Led by Craig Piercy of the Bose Public Affairs Group and the American Nuclear Society, this team will manage coalition operations, engage directly with Congress and executive branch agencies, and develop and execute advocacy strategies. Leadership and Recognition: The SSWG is composed of a diverse range of organizations from all sectors of the nuclear, medical, and research community. It is the broadest alliance of organizations in its community and members of the Steering Committee will be recognized as its leaders. The Steering Group members will receive top billing on Coalition materials, the website, and correspondence, and preference for participation in public events.
