Character Descriptions
LEAD ROLES
LYSANDER: (Male, looks 18-21), Lysander is sensitive, gentle and romantic. He is in
love with Hermia and will do anything to be with her. He is very free, spiritual and
artistic. A modern day poet with a heart to match.
DEMETRIUS: (Male, looks 18-21), Demetrius is a typical arrogant jock. He is insensitive
to the opposite sex and can be quite brutal in what he says and thinks. Demetrius is
similar to a modern day footballer a typical man’s man.
HERMIA: (Female, looks 18-21), Hermia is poised, intelligent and naïve. She is used to
being loved and popular and is Daddy’s little Princess. She is from a very well to do
family and carries herself well. In love with Lysander, but betrothed to Demetrius.
HELENA: (Female, looks 18-21) Desperate and frazzled, Helena is intense with an
addictive personality. Helena longs to be loved but doesn’t believe anyone could love her.
Naïve to the world of love, a world she longs to be involved in.
TITANIA: (Female, looks 37-40) Strong matriarchal figure as Queen of the Fairies, she
is feisty and proud. Titania is extremely stubborn and independent. She is married to
Oberon, King of the Fairies and is enduring the ultimate battle of the sexes for the
majority of the play.
OBERON: (Male, looks 35-37) Patriarchal King of the Fairies, Oberon is at time
immature, but is extremely competitive. He is playful, but also dutiful. He has a
nurturing side, which is usually hidden behind his suave demeanour.
PUCK: (Male, looks 16-21) As servant to Oberon, Puck looks up to and admires his King.
He is mischievous and cheeky, but also quite manipulative. He is in touch with his body
and has an element of camp about him. He is quite sexual and ready to play the games
between Oberon and Titania.
BOTTOM: (Male, looks 30-35) Over enthusiastic actor; very loud and energetic. Bottom
loves to be the centre of attention. He is over the top and has a lot of physicality. He is
charming, admired and the heart of the acting troupe.

SUPPORTING ROLES
THESEUS: (Male, looks 50-55) Overtly wealthy and powerful, Theseus definitely has an
eye for the ladies. He has a firm hand as the authority in the story, however is respected
and seen as a loveable playboy.
HIPPOLYTA: (Female, looks 23-35) Giggly and flirty, Hippolyta is the trophy wife of
Theseus. She is a ditsy Step ford wife that’s not very bright.
QUINCE: (Male, looks 25-40)The director of the acting troupe, Quince is the facilitator
and organiser of the acting troupe. He has a calm demeanour and is the respected peace
maker.
FLUTE: (Male, looks 17-20) Flute is given the role of the woman in the acting troupe,
however he is very awkward and not at all feminine. Younger than others in acting
troupe, desperate for acceptance from the others.
SNUG: (Male, looks 30-35) Another member of the acting troupe, Snug us quiet and
timid. He is passive and quite plain and blends into the background whenever he can. He
is given the role of the Lion in the play.
SNOUT: (Male, looks 30-35) Snout is also a member of the Acting Troupe, Snout is a
tradesmen by day and an entertainer by night.
STARVELING: (Male, looks 30-35) Member of the acting troupe, Starveling is also a
tradesmen. He plays Moonshine in the play.
MINOR ROLES
EGEUS: (Male, looks 50-55) Very traditional Father of Hermia. Wealthy and powerful
with a hot temper. Seen as very irrational. s
COBWEB, MOTH, MUSTARDSEED & PEASEBLOSSOM: (Females, 18-30) Fairies in
service to Titania. Can all be quite sulky and when all together they act like a pack of
school girls. They can be very competitive and sisterly at the same time. They see
Titania as Queen Bee and will do anything for her.
PHILOSTRATE: (Male, any age) Servant to Theseus and Hippolyta. The Director
welcomes any interpretation of this character.
