OUR MISSION
Speaking up for abused and neglected children through Court Appointed Special
Advocates, CASA volunteers.
OUR VISION
All children dream, thrive, and grow with a sense of belonging and empowerment to build
a successful future.
OUR PURPOSE
Advocates for Children advocates for abused and neglected children in Arapahoe,
Douglas, Elbert, and Lincoln counties, with the help from Court Appointed Special
Advocates (CASAs). CASAs are trained volunteers from the community.
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & BOARD CHAIR
Volunteers: Thank you so much for the time you spend with our kids, the voice you give them in court,
school, home, and in life. Thank you for making sure they see their siblings. Thank you for giving them a
positive outlook and for making sure they have the opportunities other kids have. Simple things like going to
the park or the zoo, playing games, and having a dedicated person to listen to their stories, wipe their tears,
wish them a happy birthday, and be the parent at the back-to-school night or cheer for them when they
graduate. You truly make a difference in their lives.
Donors: Thank you for the enormous difference every donation makes in the lives of these children. Your
generosity and heart help us recruit more volunteers, train more volunteers, and, this year, expand our staff
and program to serve more children at a higher level.
Board: Every great nonprofit is led by a great board of directors. Thank you for the time and energy you put
into every decision and direction. Thank you for giving so much time to us and to our kids to make sure that
each one of them has a voice and a constant adult who will walk with them through their time with us.
Staff: Thank you for giving up your weekends, nights, and sometimes holidays to make sure our kids are safe
and have a voice. Thank you for caring for your CASA volunteers and for being the constant support in their
lives.
This year has been a blessing as we moved full force from the information age to the experience age. We
have left all of our paper files behind and can now update our cases on our phones and devices wherever
we are. We have trained all of our wonderful CASA volunteers to input information immediately, which will
save them hours when writing their court reports. We have continued to build our Legacy Program and give
our emancipating kids new opportunities to speak publicly, taught them how to apply for jobs, helped them
practice interviewing, apply for colleges, apply for financial aid and scholarships, and given many of them
opportunities to perform community service and see the mountains or experience trail biking.
Most importantly, the CASA volunteers continue to be the constant voice and presence in the lives of abused
and neglected children and have spent more than 23,872 hours writing reports, visiting kids, attending
meetings, and making sure the most critical information is loud and clear in our court.
“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise
in democracy. You vote in elections
once a year, but when you volunteer,
you vote every day about the kind of
community in which you want to live.”
God bless each of you.

WHAT IS A CASA?
A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is the voice in court for abused and neglected children. Over the
past fiscal year, Advocates for Children was able to provide CASA volunteers for 851 children, but there are
hundreds more who are lost, alone, and scared . . . stuck in the child welfare system without an advocate.
After extensive training, CASA volunteers are appointed by the courts to work with the other professionals on
the case to determine the best interest of the child. Our volunteers spend time with the
children weekly, talk with the people — parents, foster parents, teachers, and doctors — involved in their lives, and serve as a consistent and caring adult during
a chaotic time. They report their observations and recommendations to the
judge, who uses this information to make decisions about where a child
should live and what kinds of services and treatment are needed. CASA
volunteers also help connect families to community resources and provide
children with opportunities to participate in fun activities that can help
them feel “normal” again.

A CASA STORY
Aaron and his brother, Charlie, have been in the foster care system for eight years. Yes, eight years—more
than half of Charlie’s life. When CASA volunteer Bonnie came into their lives, Aaron was being moved yet
again. Child services came to his school, called him out of class, and gave him a trash bag filled with his
personal belongings. His comment to Bonnie? “I’m used to it.”
But Aaron was frustrated. After so many moves, he just wanted out of the system. Even more than that, he
didn’t want his younger brother to grow up in the system. Some days he wanted to quit school. Sometimes
he thought about the military. Bonnie worked with Aaron and helped him get focused on school. Bonnie
tirelessly advocated for Aaron, communicating with school counselors and teachers, tutoring Aaron every
week, and, most important, being the positive, consistent adult in his life that he could rely on. Aaron was
the first person in his family to graduate from high school. He is learning a skilled trade and recently got his
own apartment. He celebrated his first paycheck by treating Bonnie to lunch.
Bonnie continues to advocate for Aaron’s brother, Charlie. Like his brother, he’s been moved several times,
but Charlie continues to wish and believe that he will find his forever family. Bonnie makes sure he gets to
spend time with his brother as well as friends from his old neighborhood. She’s been there in good times
and in bad, always supporting Charlie. Bonnie continues to advocate for Charlie, whether it’s working on
homework together, attending a band concert, or speaking up for Charlie in court and hoping he will find his
forever family.
