30 Day “THANKFUL” Challenge
Did you see the “Thankful Challenge” on
Facebook over the past couple of years?
This year I am feeling challenged to try this
for the entire month of November. I am
hoping that some of you will join me in this
challenge. I intend to seek out the small
things as well as the major things in life to
be “thankful” for. I know as the holidays
get closer, many families struggle, whether
financially, or from loss or many other
experiences. However, I believe that as we
take a moment each day to reflect upon
our lives even on the most difficult and
challenging days, we can find things to be
thankful for. I look forward to spending
time with your children (who by the way I
am incredibly thankful for) each day afterschool discussing people, events and
“stuff” in their lives that they are thankful
for. My hope is that these discussions will
be the foundation blocks of a strong and
trusting program.
YOUTH CONNECTION
NOVEMBER 2014
AFTERSCHOOL & DAY CAMP
Children who participate in afterschool programs are more
successful in academics, are healthier, and more often
maintain positive behaviors.
During Day Camp, the possibilities are endless. Kids have the
opportunity to explore nature, find new talents, try new
activities, gain independence, and make lasting friendships
and memories.

Fun Facts about the First Thanksgiving
The Pilgrim leader, Governor William Bradford, had organized the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621. He invited the neighboring Wampanoag Indians to the feast.
The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.
Lobster, rabbit, chicken, fish, squashes, beans, chestnuts, hickory nuts, onions, leeks, dried fruits, maple
syrup and honey, radishes, cabbage, carrots, eggs, and goat cheese are thought to have made up the first
Thanksgiving feast.
The pilgrims didn't use forks; they ate with spoons, knives, and their fingers.
The heaviest turkey ever raised was 86 pounds, about the size of a large dog.
Turkey has more protein than chicken or beef.
Turkeys will have 3,500 feathers at maturity.
Turkeys have heart attacks. The United States Air Force was doing
test runs and breaking the sound barrier. Nearby turkeys dropped
dead with heart attacks.
Turkeys have poor night vision.
AFTERSCHOOL STAFF
Kinzi Litzel has been with the Johnson County Family YMCA for over a year. She is a student at Sheridan College
and is majoring in Dental Hygiene. Although she has limited hours this semester, she is excited to be with the kids
on Mondays.
Helene Todd is a Buffalo Native. She joins our team as the resident Artist & Musician. Helene
loves to laugh and is bringing joy to the afterschool program. In addition to afterschool and day
camps, you might find Helene in the pool as a swim lesson instructor.
Cori Wilson has only been in Buffalo for a couple of years, but feels this place is AMAZING and loves calling it
home. Cori is full of energy and her “bubbly” personality is contagious. Her enthusiasm for life and for helping
kids is a great fit for the afterschool program.
