A Letter from Father Larry McNally Dear Family of St. Matthias, Easter Season greetings! Next weekend is Ascension Sunday weekend rather than the seventh Sunday of Easter season. This Holy Day was moved from its traditional 'Ascension Thursday' to Sunday a number of years ago. That liturgical change makes absolute sense with its faith-filled, hope-filled meaning. The holy day celebrates Jesus' entry into heaven, 'exalted' at God's right hand, remaining in His Glory and still praying for us. I like the opening prayer at the Mass of Ascension from our former Sacramentary as opposed to the newly translated one. The prayer, in summary, asks our God to keep us joyful in His Son's Ascension and to hopefully follow His way into Heaven, for there is our eternal glory. The weekend of June 3 and 4 is the celebration of Pentecost. tember 29, and Sunday, October 1. Our first planning meeting will be on Monday, June 5, at 7 PM in our Rectory Garden. All are welcome to join our committee whether you have been on it before or are new to us. Please join us in making our plans for GRAPE 2017. On this past Monday, May 15, I did call, for the second time, the Chief Operating Officer of the Archdiocese of Chicago, Betsy Bohlen, reminding her that it was two weeks ago to the day that I had attempted to schedule an appointment and had not yet heard back. Patty, her wonderful Administrative Assistant, took my call. I did receive a return call from Patty later in the day relating Betsy's sincere apology for not returning the initial call. Patty told me that within 48 hours, I would receive a call back. Meanwhile, at our Turn-Around-Team meeting on Tuesday of this week, one of the Archdiocesan representatives told me that he would encourage Betsy to follow up on her promise. Lots of bureaucracy from "downtown," and sadly not enough when it comes to our children and our concern for their health and safety. I will keep you informed. And as we Celebrate Ascension weekend, May 27 and 28, we will be welcoming Fr. Ted Hochstatter to our Parish. Fr. Ted will be celebrating and preaching at our Saturday night Mass at 5 PM and our two Sunday mornings Masses at 8 AM and at 10:30 AM. Please note Please see page 2 for last week's Offertory collection summary. On there will be no Sunday evening Mass on Sunday, May 28, due to Memo- behalf of our Parish Finance Committee and myself, I thank you for your rial Day weekend. Fr. We will start this book in May. The book can be bought on AMAZON, and it is also on Kindle. A gifted storyteller and spiritual director, Father James Martin, SJ, invites readers to experience the stories of the Gospels in a completely new, vivid, and exciting way to gain a deeper understanding of Jesus. Moving sequentially through the Gospels, considering not only familiar passages but also the "hidden life" of Jesus, the book offers a bold retelling of the life of Christ, faithful to the Christian tradition, while meditating on parts of the narrative that have often escaped notice. Martin provides personal stories from his own life, the most up-todate biblical scholarship, and powerful anecdotes from beloved spiritual teachers, and brings the reader along on his own real-life travels through the Holy Land. Jesus: A Pilgrimage is an invitation to know Jesus as Father Martin knows him: Messiah and Savior, as well as friend and brother. Please read the following chapters: Chapter One: Pilgrims Chapter Two: Yes, “How can this be?” Chapter Three: Bethlehem, “She gave birth to her firstborn son.” Fr. Larry’s 40th Anniversary of Ordination Please plan to join us on Sunday, May 21st as we celebrate with Fr. Larry his 40th Anniversary of Ordination.
