Unit 3 Lesson 1: Converting and Combining Units of Measurement

Unit 3 Lesson 1: Converting and Combining Units of Measurement
In this lesson you will:
 Convert different units of measurement to the same units
 Combine different units of measurement
In order to combine different units of measurement, first you must convert to the
same unit. For example, if you are adding or subtracting pounds and ounces, first
you must convert to all the same units. This lesson uses metric measurement to
just to give you some practice using that system of measurement. Don’t panic,
because the procedures are just the same! There are many online conversion
calculators that you may use to perform the conversion for you and this will save
time. Try this one: http://www.convert-me.com/en/
Example #1:
Add 15 kL 2/3L to 8 kL 7/8 cL
Adding 15 KL to 8 kL:
15 KL + 8 KL = 23 KL
Convert 2/3 L to cL:
1 Liter = 100 centiliter
.667L x 100 cL = 66.7 cL
Convert 7/8 cL to decimal form:
7/8 cL = .875 cL
Combine (Add) cL total:
66.7 cL + .875 cL = 67.575 cL
Add Totals: 23 KL + 67.575 cL
Answer = 23 KL and 67.575 cL
Example #2:
Add 27 g 15 mg to 42 g 5 cg
Adding 27 g to 42 g:
27 g + 42 g = 69 g
Adding 15 mg to 5 cg:
Convert 5 cg to mg
1 centigram = 10 milligram
5 cg = 5 X 10 mg = 50 mg
Adding 15 mg + 50 mg = 65 mg
27 g 15 mg + 42 g 5 cg = 69 g 65 mg
Answer = 69 g 65 mg
