Maryland RISK WATCH® Team Report Spring 2015 Update to the MSFA Executive Committee & Fire and Injury Prevention & Life Safety Committee Maryland Risk Watch Team continues to thank the MSFA leadership and members for their support throughout the past TWELVE years. The day to day work of this team of volunteers recognizes the primary support given by the MSFA through the Fire & Injury Prevention and Life Safety Committee. Maryland Risk Watch has reach children across the state through day time, weekend and evening programming. Prevention Activity Dates for 2015: , March Safe Kids Maryland meeting held at MIEMSS on Wednesday March 4 2015 included a report from Teresa Anne Crisman and Cyndy Wright Johnson on the December Safe Roads Safe Kids summit supported by World Health Organization, NHTSA and Safe Kids Worldwide. The international presentations focused on Global Road Safety for ALL ages with motor vehicle, pedestrian, bike and motor scooter safety. One of the key goals is to have everyone sign a position statement in support of the Third UN Global Road Safety Week – May 4-10, 2015. “Safies” (similar to selfies) with the message Save Kids Lives are encouraged for Facebook Postings. For more information on the Child Declaration for Road Safety, please visit - www.savekidslives2015.org/ nd Public Educator and Life Safety Seminar held at MFRI on March 22 2015 focused on Vison 2020 National Strategies for Fire Loss Prevention. The seminar had excellent attendance and diverse speakers. Maryland Safe Kids Meetings: June 3, 2015 –Partnership for Safer Maryland Annual Summit September 2, 2015 @ 12:30 PM – 3PM Safe Kids Maryland @ MIEMSS September 29, 2015– Mid Atlantic Life Safety Conference @ Hopkins APL APRIL Prevention Focuses: April 15, 2015 was the national kick off on the Never Leave Your Child Alone in a vehicle (also known as “Where’s Baby?”) – the campaigns reminds parents, family members and child care providers to establish reminders so that children are never left alone in a car. Last year 30 children died in the USA and three of those were in Maryland. We want to be sure that this information reaches the public at every opportunity. 2015 MSFA Convention: We will work closely with the convention committee and maximize whatever space if available for Risk Watch and Fire Prevention. To make the exhibits more interactive – we are requesting the volunteer participation from the MSFA Fire & Injury Prevention and Life Safety Committee. Training will be provided to the Prevention Ambassadors at their May meeting. Onsite training will also be provided on SUNDAY of convention by content experts. Current commitments: 1. Cecil County DES will lead a table on “Make the Right Call”- additional volunteers are need 2. EMS for Children (MIEMSS) will provide the Resource Table for Life Safety professional 3. Safe Kids Maryland (MIEMSS) will lead a table on Home Safety 4. PRMC (American Trauma Society) will lead a table on Water Safety 5. Risk Watch team will again lead youth volunteers in a Safety Driving interactive display 6. EMSC CPS& OP project will provide education on Child and Youth Passenger Safety 7. Fire & Burn Prevention - MSFA Committee will lead and staff the table on Fire and Burn Prevention. We have the equipment but need the committee to staff the table for three days. As always we are recruiting volunteers to help at the interactive teaching stations – please email [email protected] if you know adults and youth who would like to participate at this year’s Convention – we provide onsite training and request as little as a 2 hour commitment. Help is primarily needed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Sunday we adjourn in the afternoon to support the MSFA Fire Ambassador competition. Wednesday we will provide onsite training on how to provide Prevention & Life Safety education at the local level. This year we hope to have more Safety Mascots to draw children and families to the Risk Watch Room.
