Mining
I) Introduction to Mining
A) Mining: the process or industry of obtaining coal or other minerals from a mine.
B) Mining has several hazards including: cave-ins, gas explosions, equipment crushing,
chemical leakages, electrocution, fires
C) Mining damages the environment, it pollutes water and the air around the mining facility.
II) Mining and Child Labor
A) Boys twelve years of age may be legally employed in the mines of West Virginia, by day
or by night, and for as many hours as the employers care to make them toil or their bodies
will stand the strain back in the mid 1900s.
B) It's cheaper to use men, and especially boys, than machinery in the coal mines of northeast India. The federal government has passed a law banning child labour, but nobody
pays it much attention. The government does not enforce nor upholds this law.
III) Armed Conflict in India
A) Sierra-Leone, Central-African Republic, Zimbabwe, Angola, Ivory Coast are all being
affected by the blood diamond trade.
B) Blood diamonds: a rough diamond mined in an area controlled by insurgent forces whose
sale is used to finance antigovernment military action.

C) The Kimberley Process is an international measure to prevent companies from buying
and acquiring blood diamonds.
D) The limits of the Kimberley Process is that it is limited to only insurgent forces that go
against established governments, it is thus restricted to preventing the purchase of
diamonds from countries whose own governments are committing human abuse.
IV) The Democratic Republic of Congo
A) AngloGold Ashanti, part of the international mining conglomerate Anglo American,
developed links with one murderous armed group, the Nationalist and Integrationist Front
(FNI).
B) The gold is being sent to Uganda where it later on is sold to European markets.
