VOLUME 7 NO. 1 AUGUST 2016 ~Come find your place in God’s family.~ Kanapaha Presbyterian Church Gainesville, Florida From The Pastor . . . Give It A Rest! After studying soldiers work patterns, the army discovered that after seven consecutive days of hard work the soldiers performance dropped, without them realizing it. Likewise participants in another study shared on a 60 Minutes episode were unaware that their performance suffered when sleep deprived. Brain scans of the test subjects proved there was a disconnect between the emotional centers of the brain and the part of the brain that controls rational thought and decision making resulting in moodiness and emotional outburst not seen in well rested people. 8/7/16 Lord’s Supper 12th Sunday after Pentecost Dan Graham, Guest Preacher Psalm 90:1-17 John 14:1-6* 8/14/16 13th Sunday after Pentecost Matt Benz-Whittington, Guest Preacher Psalm 80:1-2, 8-19 Luke 12:49-56* 8/21/16 14 th Sunday after Pentecost Dan Graham, Guest Preacher Jeremiah 1:4-10 Hebrews 12:18-29 Luke 13:10-17* 8/28/16 15th Sunday aftr Pentecost Dan Graham, Guest Preacher Psalm 81:11-16 Luke 14:1-14* 9/4/16 16th Sunday aftr Pentecost Dan Graham, Guest Preacher Jeremiah 18:1-11 Philemon 1-21 Luke 14:25-33* Sermon Text* When we get too little rest and work day in and day out for weeks and months on end, our performance, memory, and relationship ability all drop; we become emotionally burned out. The occasional day off doesn’t seem to help because we often use them to catch up on everything we’ve let slide in our personal lives. It’s no wonder we’re pooped. God never intended us to live this way. In the OT, when God gave Moses the 10 commandments, the Lord said, “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work. (Exodus 20:9-11). God’s word also teaches in Lev 25, that every seventh year should be a Sabbath year: “Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather in their yield; but in the seventh year there shall be Sabbath of complete rest . . . “ In This Issue . . . The Sabbath commandment is the longest of the 10. It’s almost as if the Lord went into detail so that we would be sure to get it right! Just as piece of equipment comes with an instruction manual, our Creator gives us instructions on taking care of ourselves as well. But rather than taking this commandment seriously, we often brag and complain about how busy, how overworked, and how stressed out we are. Sadly often our self-worth can become caught up in how much we can produce rather than to whom we belong. I’m as guilty as anyone else. All pastors in our Presbytery have an extended Sabbath built in our call packages. After serving for seven years, we are to take a three month sabbatical. It’s year 13 for me at Kanapaha and I’m finally going on my first sabbatical in August. Observing Sabbath is a reminder that we are loved because we are God’s children, not for what we can accomplish. The word “Sabbath” in Hebrew means rest. The heart of Sabbath is that we stop working so that we can rest and delight in God’s good gifts. When God rested on the seventh day, it wasn’t because God was tired; the Lord stopped to delight in the creation. Sabbath gives us time to slow down and delight in what we’ve accomplished over the last week and in the blessings God has shared with us. Observing the Sabbath means carving out time for reflection. In the book of Psalms, David says, “Be still and know that I am God.” Reflection includes examining our lives, our goals, our priorities. It’s a chance for us to think about the week behind and the week ahead. It’s a chance to give serious consideration our lives. Finally, Sabbath is a time for renewal. Christians have observed the Sabbath on Sunday since 312 AD when Constantine declared Sunday as the official day of rest, In the early church, Sunday came to symbolize renewal because of its connection to the Resurrection. Our Sunday should be a chance for us to experience renewal as well. The best way is by attending church. The songs (hymns), the prayers, the scripture, and the preaching should lead us into closer fellowship with God. The time spent in church is less than 1% of your week, but it is often the most important hour of your life in any given seven day period. The spiritual discipline of practicing Sabbath offers us sanctuary in the midst of our busy and often hectic lives. It is one of God’s good gifts. If God commanded it, who are we to argue? I intend to use it wisely and invite you to do the same. NEWS FROM KANAPAHA Session (Cont’d) Page 6 by Clerk of Session, Joan Stout CALLED SESSION MEETING—SUNDAY, JUNE 26, 2016 The Called Session Meeting was called to order at 10:02 am in McCormick Hall by Moderator Rev. Dawn Conti. MEETING PURPOSE: Continued planning of unified service ELDERS PRESENT: Kaley Behl, Tom Jordan, Charlie Turner, Karen Kirkman, Kim Friend, Sally Walker, Joan Stout (Clerk of the Session) ELDERS EXCUSED: Loretha Cleveland A QUORUM WAS PRESENT MSP to approve the agenda. The Session discussed the following ideas regarding the planning of the unified service: Richard Barratt believes it may be possible to purchase a wireless projector and use projector paint on the wall instead of a projector screen. Karen Kirkman reported that the ad for the Village Journal was $585 and that she would be doing some Facebook advertising at a later date. Rev. Conti reported that Rick Klopp had suggested using a canvas needle and special thread on the pew cushions if the buttons are removed and Sally Walker offered to try sewing one of the cushions herself to test it out. Tom Jordan gave an update regarding the signage and the feedback he received from the email he sent out with various options regarding potential signs. For now, retrofitting the current sign and cleaning it up seems viable. Tom is still waiting on cost quotes. MSP to approve the directional signage up to $2000 with the following conditions: Church shaped directional signs with blue background and white lettering Elimination of the word “Church” in the office sign Only use handicap symbol instead of wording Tom Jordan reported he had not yet received the estimate from Sound Ideas regarding the microphone and speaker (10-12 microphones with wire running under the church). Rev. Conti reported we had received a $400 donation for a new laptop but we should wait until we meet with Richard Barratt prior to making a decision about the purchase. Tom Jordan reported that Linda Goshorn had suggested printing copies of songs instead of projecting them for the unified service. The meeting was closed with prayer by Rev. Conti at 10:29 am. NEWS FROM KANAPAHA Page 7 Session (Cont’d) by Clerk of Session, Joan Stout CALLED SESSION MEETING—SUNDAY, JUNE 27, 2016 The Called Session Meeting was called to order at 7:01 pm in the Fellowship Hall by Moderator Rev. Dawn Conti. The Christ Candle was lit, and the meeting was opened with prayer by Rev. Conti. Joys and Concerns were shared by all. MEETING PURPOSE: 1. Continued planning of unified service 2. Rescheduling of July Session Meeting 3. July 3, 2016 Church and Café Worship Service ELDERS PRESENT: Kaley Behl, Tom Jordan, Charlie Turner, Karen Kirkman, Kim Friend ELDERS EXCUSED: Sally Walker, Loretha Cleveland, Joan Stout (Clerk of the Session) MEMBERS PRESENT: Richard Barratt, Paul Bennett A QUORUM WAS PRESENT MSP to approve the agenda. The Session decided not to hold the July 3, 2016 Church and Café Worship Service due to the unavailability of any musicians. The Session decided not to meet in August. Due to scheduling conflicts on Wednesday nights, the Session looked at moving regularly scheduled Session Meetings to the third Tuesday of each month. Elders present agree that changing the date was agreeable. Rev. Conti will check with the other Session members who were not present to ensure there are no conflicts before we moving the Session Meetings. The Session met with Richard Barratt and Paul Bennett due to their knowledge of technology regarding future planning of the unified service, specifically in the area of sound and projection in the Sanctuary. The following ideas were discussed. Although less intrusive, the use of projector paint may be more expensive than a screen. The two existing projector screens were removed from storage to evaluate them. If a new projector is purchased, it is important to get one with keystoning. Tinting the clear window nearest to the wall where we want to project may be necessary. Richard Barrett wants to use the existing projector in the library and screen from storage to evaluate the viability of using a projector and screen in the sanctuary. Tom Jordan is getting a quote on June 28, 2016, regarding microphones and mixer. To allow for further space for the musicians on stage, the altar could be moved to the floor and the middle pew closest to the stage could be moved to the back of the church. Two ceiling fans need to be raised to prevent interference with the projector. We should hire an electrician to raise the ceiling fan. The current positioning of the pulpit appears appropriate. Richard Barratt will talk to Sound Ideas on July 9th because of some confusion over what may work best with speakers and other sound equipment. The meeting was closed with prayer by Rev. Conti at 8:21pm. NEWS FROM KANAPAHA Session (Cont’d) Page 8 by Acting Clerk of Session, Kaley Behl CALLED SESSION MEETING—SUNDAY, JULY 10, 2016 The Called Session Meeting was called to order at 10:03 am in McCormick Hall by Moderator Rev. Conti. MEETING PURPOSE: Continued planning of unified service ELDERS PRESENT: Kaley Behl (Acting Clerk of Session), Tom Jordan, Karen Kirkman, Sally Walker ELDERS EXCUSED: Kim Friend, Charlie Turner, Joan Stout (Clerk of the Session) MEMBERS PRESENT: Richard Barratt, Linda Goshorn A QUORUM WAS PRESENT MSP to approve the agenda. The Session discussed the following ideas regarding the planning of the unified service: After testing out equipment, Richard Barratt and Tom Jordan reported the following: We do not need a screen to display the image from the projector. The projector and computer can be operated remotely and wirelessly. Richard Barratt resourced a projector to donate to the church. We can now use existing sound equipment due to the recent loss of musicians. We will still need to purchase a new computer. Two existing fans need to be removed and two others raised four feet. An electrician should be hired to run power to the projector and modify the fans. Paul Bennett will contact an electrician. Paul Bennett will research scaffolding for use in the sanctuary while the work is being completed. We can also look at altering the kerosene chandelier’s positioning to make it safer/more stable. Karen Kirkman presented the ad for the Village Journal and added that the magazine was writing an article on the church. Sally Walker reported that she examined the sanctuary cushions and believed that due to the number of buttons on each cushion, removing the buttons would be labor intensive and nor recommended at this time. Rev. Dawn Conti reported she had not found anyone who had extra Bibles to match the existing ones being used at KPC, despite putting the request online. The Bibles from Highlands Presbyterian Church were not the same version as the ones used at KPC and there we also only a limited number of them. The Session also discussed the following additional items: Rev. Dawn Conti advised that Pastor Josh Braley would be unable to attend the next Session meeting scheduled for July 19, 2016 and requested that the Session meet for the Holy Listening on Wednesday July 20, 2016 as well. Rev. Dawn Conti reminded the Session about the resignation of Elder Loretha Cleveland. Tom Jordan and Sally Walker will be working on nominations. The following business concerning the cemetery was discussed: A tree on a neighboring property adjacent to the cemetery has fallen over the fence and needs to be removed. NEWS FROM KANAPAHA Session (Cont’d) Page 9 by Acting Clerk of Session, Kaley Behl CALLED SESSION MEETING—SUNDAY, JULY 10, 2016 (Cont’d) Karen Kirkman stated she has obtained better contact info for Bill Jamerson who mows the cemetery. The Session discussed the following ideas regarding the planning of the unified service: Rev. Dawn Conti shared a sample program designed for the unified service. Because there is still a blank page, the Session discussed using that space in the following ways: Place attendance and/or financial information for comparison Post something inspirational or advertise upcoming events Rev. Dawn Conti suggested setting up an acolyte rotation and schedule for maintaining and presenting PowerPoint presentation slides for the unified service. The Bibles we needed have been found. Sally Walker volunteered to pick them up. Jim Arnett and Rev. Dawn Conti are going to meet in the Sanctuary on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at 2 pm to discuss the rearrangement of furniture. The following was discussed regarding music planning: Taize music with the incorporation of a flute would be a nice addition to the service. Several Session members agreed to assist with the search as follows: Karen Kirkman will reach out to Evans Haile Sally Walker will reach out to Gary Langford. Rev. Dawn Conti will contact Professor Jenkins from UF. Combined practices will be held on August 25th and September 8th at 7 pm.
