Feeding the Growing Ambition
of European Animated Movies
Cartoon masters 2011
GETTING YOUR BEST SCRIPT READY FOR PRODUCTION
Creating compelling stories and developing the best possible script is a long and complex process.
But one that will ultimately facilitate production and make your film stand out in the crowd.
Expert advice from script specialist Richelle Wilder.
PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN FILMS & THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY
Cross promotion and the development of film-related content on other platforms are strategies that
consolidate the film notoriety and longevity and also enrich the animation industry.
Case studies on such partnerships.
CROWDFUNDING & THE NEW MEDIA PRODUCTION GUARANTEE FUND
How and under which conditions can internauts be involved in the ‘gap’ financing and promotion of
your film? Some tangible results in crowdfunding will be revealed. A thorough presentation of the new
European Commission cinema loan guarantee fund to ease credit access for producers.
LOWER BUDGET FILMS FOR ENLARGED AUDIENCES
Animated movies under 5M€ using both 2D and CGI techniques are becoming common in European
animation. As new inspiring ways of telling stories are emerging for larger audiences. The talent of
creators and producers.

The high standard
of European Animation
T
he industry of European animated films is still
growing with an increased number of films produced
and distributed worldwide.
The combination of excellent training schools, funding
schemes and tax incentives, a tradition of co-productions
and talent that finds its expression in a new way of telling
stories, all that has contributed to set apart European
animation from American major studios. It now enables
European animated features to culminate in admission
levels in cinema theaters never reached before.
Latest reports – from Unifrance Film in particular – confirm
that the performance of animated features in cinema
theaters is different from other genres as far as audience
figures, number of prints, exhibition time, promotion and
life span are concerned. In all cases animated features enjoy
figures that are above any other cinema form.
These are rejoicing news for the industry at large.
Europe’s ambition in creative terms can also be praised. There
have never been so many films d’auteurs, novel and comic
book adaptations in collaboration with their authors, science
fiction fantasies that target an enlarged audience, interested
in innovative story-telling more teenage/adult-oriented.
Munich, Bavaria’s glittering capital
«Munich nestles between art and beer like a village
between hills.» Originally written by Heinrich Heine some
150 years ago, these words remain true today. With the
Opera, the Oktoberfest, the Pinakothek art galleries, BMW
and Bayern Munich, the city manages to marry old Bavarian
tradition with vibrant modern life.
Proud of its famous onion domes, the 15th century Gothic
Church of Our Lady is Munich’s unmistakable landmark. Not
far away, at Marienplatz, the carillon plays three times a day.
And just a stone’s throw from here is probably the most
famous tavern in the world, the Hofbräuhaus beer hall.
Other sightseeing highlights include the Olympic centre
where the Olympic Games were held in 1972, the baroque
Nymphenburg Palace, the Bavaria Film Studios and the
Englischer Garten, a beautiful park renowned for its lively
Biergärten.
The annual highlight of Munich’s calendar is, of course, the
Munich Beer Festival or Oktoberfest. However, the Bavarian
capital is also known for a number of other cultural festivals,
both large and small, and events such as the Munich Book
Show and the Christmas market which starts on 25 November.
To accompany cinema release, Internet with social networks
and viral marketing still represent a powerful promotional
tool that producers should not overlook. Thus film-related
content such as video or mobile games are on the increase
thanks to new partnerships with the entertainment industry
at large. Rovio’s Angry Birds cross promotion with Rio, the 20th
Century Fox animated feature is enlightning in this respect.
At latest Cartoon Movie (March 2011), it was noted
that production budgets have decreased. This is why it
is important for producers to diversify their sources of
funding through co-productions, equity financing and other
specialised bank loans.
This year’s edition of Cartoon Feature will thus concentrate on
how to deliver the best story for your film through improved
script-writing and development, on other forms of fund-raising
and financing through crowdfunding on the Internet and
guarantee loans through the new MEDIA production guarantee
fund. Emphasis will also be put on how to increase the notoriety
of films through better distribution and partnerships with
mobile and video game companies.
As is customary we will also look in depth at case studies on
what Europeans do so well at the moment: films d’auteurs
and lower budget films for enlarged audiences.
The Programme
Developing the best story
for your film
Richelle Wilder from Script Matters, has headed screenplay
and story development at Aardman Animation, worked
with Dreamworks and headed Development at Pathe. From
story analysis, character development, script editing..., the
long road to final script approval is sometimes shortened
to the detriment of the story. Some expert advice by a
script specialist on why and how you can develop the best
story for your film.
Co-producing with Germany
The largest populated country in Europe, Germany enjoys
an enviable range of animation training schools, talent
and production companies as well as strong film financial
support from the Federal and Regional Bodies. Details
on how to plan a film with German involvement and
funding will be shared to entice non-German producers
to co-produce films in this significant market.
Crowdfunding –
A new way to finance films
To supplement traditional film funding methods, and
«gap» finance your film, crowdfunding is emerging as
a hybrid money-raising model. Examples of film-raising
up to 900 000 € can be accounted for and a number
of successful crowdfunding Internet platforms are now
available. NewFaceFilm is one of them and Director Pino
Foris will explain how you can partially fund and promote
your films through this innovative method.
MEDIA Guarantee Production Fund
Endowed with 8 MEUR from 2010-2013, the MEDIA Production
Guarantee Fund aims at supporting the European film
industry by facilitating credit access to private sources
of financing. It also guarantees part of the loan given to
producers by financial institutions. IFCIC in France and
Audiovisual SGR in Spain will each administer the Fund
with the European Commission. Florence Aviles (TBC), from
IFCIC will detail practical conditions of access to this Fund.
Industry partnerships
between animated movies &
video/mobile games
With over 300 million Angry Birds game downloads,
Rovio, the Finnish-based entertainment company has
developed an innovative strategy towards its franchise
going from touchscreen smartphones to social gaming,
merchandising, publishing… One of its latest development
includes a unique integration between Angry Birds and
the 20th Century Fox animated feature Rio released last
Spring. Details of this partnership (TBC).
Latest trends in Europe: lower
budget films and films d’auteurs
As more animated features are released and exported,
and as financing sources have diminished, many budgets
have decreased to 5M € or under. An abundance of
films d’auteurs, comic book and novel adaptations but
also science fiction fantasies for an older audience are
flourishing with an international potential that has rarely
been matched. Case studies.
Finding the best sales agent and
distributor for your film
Irina Ignatiew, EVP International at Telepool GmbH, will
explain from a domestic and international perspective
where the animation market stands at the moment. Her
company is presently involved in Thor, Niko2 and Seven
Dwarfs. She will define her role as sales agent/distributor
and in particular how she handles relationships with
producers, distribution and film exploitation.
Promoting films with social
networking and viral marketing
With the increased number of animated films being
released and the multiplicity of distribution channels,
the marketing of films has evolved to encompass the
audience’s new habits. Our guest speaker will inform
participants of new and changing consumers’ trends and
how to best serve the promotion and launch of a film with
media, non media partners and social networks.
