Inspiring Minds ~ Building Community ~ Transforming Lives
HORIZONS HAMPTON ROADS
To Our Horizons Hampton Roads Family,
Through 16 years, Horizons has served public school youth in Norfolk, Portsmouth
and Virginia Beach in ever increasing numbers, reaching 400 students from 62 public
schools in 2015. Our students are encouraged to realize their full potential,
succeeding through high school and ready to enter college or the work force.
Horizons’ expert teaching staff delivers academic instruction in reading, math, and
STEM to eager students in grades K-8 during our six week, full day summer program.
Reading is a focus. We test skill levels for all students at the beginning of each summer.
Reading specialists work with small groups and individual students to improve on
weak areas. Testing at summer end typically shows 2-3 months improvement in skill
levels, compounded year after year as students return to Horizons each summer.
Nutritious breakfast and lunch, art and music, field trips and swimming round out the
daily schedule to create a healthy opportunity for students to gain confidence in their
ability to succeed.
Horizons aims for a 9 year investment in each student. Arielle, Dondre, Jedaya, and
Claudette were among the first Horizons students who started in Kindergarten and
returned each year, like 80% of Horizons students. Now young adults, they are
enrolled at William & Mary, Virginia Wesleyan College, and Old Dominion with
scholarships. Each still returns to Horizons every summer to serve as a student aide
and mentor for current students.
Horizons looks forward to providing more opportunities to inspire minds, build
community and transform lives!

Roast & Toast Gala & Auction 2015 Honoring
Paul Hirschbiel
OUR 10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
On April 11th, we proudly honored our Founding Chair, Paul O. Hirschbiel, at our
10th Annual Roast & Toast Gala & Auction. The exciting “Rat Pack” themed evening
featured a robust Live and Silent Auction, along with live entertainment by Susan
Hirschbiel. Roasters taking hilarious jabs at Paul included Congressman Scott
Rigell, Senator Mark Warner, and Paul’s incredible children, Matt & Anna Hirschbiel.
2015 Roast & Toast Committee Chair, Danny Plante shared “Our signature event has
evolved into the region’s best vanity fair promising great company, a sprinkle of
irreverence and libation, and the kind of goodwill essential to the financial means of
our education philanthropy. Paul was the perfect honoree for our tenth anniversary!”
Over 550 attendees from across Hampton Roads joined us for an extended, yet fun
evening, to honor an admired local community leader and our Founding Chair. Paul
was honored with resolutions signed by all three mayors from all three Horizons
Hampton Roads program site cities (Norfolk, Portsmouth, & Virginia Beach),
commemorating April 11th, 2015 “Paul Hirschbiel Day of Education”. The
Hirschbiels and all our generous supporters helped us raise close to $228,000 to
support our 2015 summer academic enrichment program.

STUDENT LEADERS: BANK OF AMERICA AND HORIZONS
Jamie Nervil and Casey Reilly joined our summer staff in 2015 thanks
to a $10,000 grant from the Bank of America Student Leader program.
Both high school students joined our teachers and students throughout
our six weeks and felt the tremendous impact our program has on the
lives of close to 400 children in our region. Casey & Jamie worked in
various roles while on our summer staff and shared their inspiring
experience with the Horizons Hampton Roads Board of Directors at our
2015 Annual Meeting. “Horizons is giving hope and opportunity to
children who need it the most. This program has changed my life as much
as it has changed the lives of the hundreds of children it serves. I am
proud to be a part of the Horizons Hampton Roads family and because of
my experience, I too plan to pursue a life of service and non-profit work.”
– Casey Reilly, 2015 Bank of America Student Leader
TBA “SHUCKED IN THE PARK”: 1ST ANNUAL EVENT
Tidewater Builders Association hosted the first annual “Shucked in the
Park” Oyster Roast in October 2014. We had the opportunity to partner
with TBA for this fun community event. Leaders in the community and
supporters came out for an evening of networking and great food. The
event raised thousands for 4 local charities including Horizons Hampton
Roads! A 2nd annual event successfully took place on Oct. 23, 2015 at the
Virginia Beach Oceanfront.
SEEING IS BELIEVING: THANKS TO ALL OUR 2015 PROGRAM VISITORS
Every summer, we welcome visitors to tour the program during our six-week
session. Seeing our teachers in action, engaging with our students in the
classroom, and watching the smiles while being surrounded by learning and
enrichment is why you must see it to believe it! Supporters, prospects, and
community partners witness the transformation our program has on the lives of
the hundreds of K- 8th grade students we serve. Visitors leave our students and
program sites feeling inspired to help and amazed at the quality of learning and
progress each Horizons student displays. 2016 program dates: June 28 – August 5.
Huge Horizons Thank You to our private host schools!
For 6-weeks in the summer, these private institutions open their doors 100% in-kind for our low-income public school
K-8th grade students. Together we are nurturing hundreds of children every summer towards a successful future.
