INSTANT PIANO FOR
HOPELESSLY BUSY PEOPLE
Some music teachers may not want you to
know this, but you don’t need years of weekly
lessons to learn piano. In just a few hours, you
can learn enough secrets of the trade to give
you years of musical enjoyment. How? While
regular piano teachers teach note reading,
piano professionals use chords. And you can
learn all the chords you’ll need to play any
song in this one session. Any song, any style,
any key. While knowing how to read the
treble clef is a good foundation, many students
take this workshop with NO prior piano
experience. Craig Coffman has extensive
experience as a professional pianist and music
director. Having taught piano privately for
many years, Coffman will share piano players’
tricks of the trade. A $29 materials fee is

songs for yu to learn to play by ear. You won’t

It’s all the music theory you need to succeed,
gently explained and simplified for the nonmusician. You’ll be amazed at what you can
do. Also suitable for guitar players and other
chord instruments. “Instant Piano” (or prior

BIRDS, BEES AND BEYOND:
HOW TO HELP POLLINATORS
NEW!
Pollinators need your help! Concerns
over the loss of honeybees are making headlines
these days-but did you know that honeybees
were imported from Europe? More than 4,000
native bee species are found in North America
with about 1,000 occurring in California?
Additionally, beetles, moths, birds, bats, and even
some rodents are vital pollinators of valuable crops
and valued ornamental plants. There is increasing
evidence that many pollinators are in decline.
Join us for lively discussion as we learn more about
pollinators, plants, and how you can help make
your corner of the world more pollinator-friendly.
The class covers simple things you can do at home
to encourage pollinator diversity and abundance,
such as a bee hotel or wildflower seed bomb that
each student can make and take in class. A $10
materials fee is payable to the instructor in class.

PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS
With Sawdust Art & Craft Festival
This popular summer event in Laguna Beach
– now in its 83rd year – is acclaimed for its
awe-inspiring theatrical celebration of tableaux
vivants – “living pictures.” Magnificent works
of art, both classical and contemporary, will
come to life as real people pose to resemble
their counterparts in the original pieces of art,
along with full orchestra and live narration.
Each year the show wins recognition as the best
presentation of its kind anywhere. The 2016
Pageant show titled, “Partners,” will explore the
stories of compelling collaborations that led to
the creation of unforgettable artworks. Filled
with provocative and passionate tales of some of
art’s dynamic duos – artists and patrons, models,
muses, even dance partners, “Partners” pulls back
the curtain to reveal the significant collaborations
that created great masterpieces for us to celebrate.
Sometimes, two is the magic number! Enjoy time
at leisure prior at the always-popular Sawdust Art
& Craft Festival featuring artists selling ceramics,
glasswork, jewelry, paintings, photography,
sculpture, woodwork and clothing. Prior to the
show, enjoy dinner on your own in downtown
Laguna Beach which offers a number of different
eateries. Main-tier section seats.

The Writer’s Corner
the “write” stuff
A Short Course on Creative Writing
Stories are the essence of what makes us human.
Through them we share experiences, learn new
perspectives, and explore the world around us. With
this four-part course, we will delve into writing
basics, generating ideas, structuring narrative (fiction
and non-fiction), crafting prose, and the revision
process. Each evening includes a brief lecture, in
class writing exercises and discussions. This class
will leave you with a firm grasp on the essentials of
crafting a compelling story. The goal is to lead you
to a finished piece by the end of the course. Class
requires about one hour outside of class time working
on assignments. Sandy Masuo served as a staff editor
and writer for a variety of entertainment magazines
for more than 15 years. She was a columnist for the
Boston Phoenix and a regular contributor to the Los
Angeles Times Calendar. In addition to her writing
credentials, she holds a Master’s Degree in Education
from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
