Multiplying Decimals
Explain how finding a whole number estimate before your
multiply the decimals can help you make sure your decimal
placement is correct.
Word Problems
1. Clare went to Party City to buy party favors to give out at her
birthday party. She bought 15 erasers, which were .75 each. How
much did the erasers cost altogether?
2. Every week, Darlene spends $46.89 on gas. How much would she
spend on gas over a 5 week period?
3. Michael Phelps can swim the 100m freestyle in 47.51 seconds. If he
swims this same time 8 times in his career, how many seconds would
that be total?
4. Write and solve a word problem that requires you to multiply decimals.

lemonade, how much money did he make?

Multiplying Decimals Answer Key
Explain how finding a whole number estimate before your
multiply the decimals can help you make sure your decimal
placement is correct.
When you use a whole number estimate, you get a ballpark
figure to see if your answer is reasonable. For example, if
you are looking at 3.6 x 4.2, the whole number estimate would
be 4 x 4 = 16. When I multiply my decimals, I get 1512, so the
best place for the decimal would be after the 15. = 15.12,
since it is close to my whole number estimate.
