Eliminaon using Mulplicaon
September 07, 2015
Warm up
• Lets find some common denominators!
I can ... solve systems of linear equaons using eliminaon.
Jan 197:05 AM
Review of what we did yesterday
Can you solve this:
6x – 9y = 111
What is the problem???
‐5x + 9y = 103
What about this:
5x + 6y = ‐8
2x + 3y = ‐5
None of the variables will cancel out, and changing the signs does not work…. So here is what we are going to Jan 197:05 AM
Same steps as Elimination yesterday except step 1
• Step 1: Multiply at least one equation by a number that will cause a variable to eliminate when you add the two equations. (you may have to multiply both equations by a number).
Example:
5x + 6y = ‐8
2x + 3y = ‐5
Jan 197:05 AM
Now follow the same steps for regular elimination
• 5x + 6y = ‐8
• ‐4x – 6y = 10
Jan 197:05 AM
Jan 197:05 AM
Lets try another one
• 9x + y = 13
• 3x + 2y = ‐4

64 Elimination Using Multiplication.notebook
This one might be tricky
• 4x + 2y = 8
• 3x + 3y = 9
Jan 197:05 AM
Last one… • 6x + 2y = 2
• 4x + 3y = 8
September 07, 2015
You try one
• 5x – 3y = 6
• 2x + 5y = ‐10
