Welcome
The 47th National Athletic Directors Conference
is December 9-13, 2016, at the Gaylord Opryland
Resort & Convention Center in Nashville,
Tennessee. The National Athletic Directors
Conference, sponsored by the National
Federation of State High School Associations
(NFHS) and the National Interscholastic Athletic
Administrators Association (NIAAA), is the single
premier conference that provides an outstanding
educational in-service program for interscholastic athletic administrators. This first-class
conference is foremost in featuring professional
speakers and an exhibit show with more than
300 exhibit booth spaces, as well as proven
athletic administrators who willingly share
their experience and expertise on a variety of
educational topics.
The NIAAA will again hold its business functions
in conjunction with the conference, along with
its popular Leadership Training Institute. There
will be a total of 44 courses that cover a variety
of topics, and early registration is a must, as
classes fill rapidly. All courses are outstanding,
and you will want to work at least one into your
conference schedule.

First-time conference attendees are encouraged
to attend the orientation meeting from 10:00 a.m.
to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, December 10. This
session is designed to provide beneficial
information pertaining to the conference. All
people who attend will receive a voucher for one
complimentary Leadership Training Course (LTC)
at either a 2017 state or national conference.
The NFHS/NIAAA National Conference Advisory
Committee will facilitate discussions centering
on the meeting format, as well as the professional and social aspects of the conference.
The NFHS Board of Directors, NIAAA Board of
Directors, the NFHS/NIAAA National Conference
Advisory Committee and the Tennessee Host
Committee hope all attendees thoroughly enjoy
the entire conference experience. The conference
has a well-earned reputation that exemplifies
professionalism at all times.
The conference luncheon and banquet programs
allow attendees to recognize their peers through
presentations of awards. Out of respect for the
award recipients, we ask that you attend these
events. The luncheon and banquet are both
business casual events. Since we serve students
around the country, no alcoholic beverages will

The conference is offering housing for attendees
beginning December 7 and ending December 15.
The contracted hotel offers a room rate of
$175/night for single/double occupancy. Hotel
room rates are quoted exclusive of current sales
and occupancy taxes, which are 15.25 percent,
plus a $2.50 city tax per night, for a total pernight cost of $204.19.

3:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m., respectively.
Every effort will be made to accommodate guests
arriving prior to these times as rooms become

The Nashville International Airport (BNA) is
located 8.3 miles from the Gaylord Opryland
Resort & Convention Center, and is an
approximate 12-minute drive.
The Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention
Center offers a shuttle service to/from the
Nashville International Airport at a $19 fee
each way. You may also take a cab, which
cost approximately $30 each way.
Hertz Transportation
The Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center has a partnership with Hertz (615-391-0162 /
https://www.hertz.com). For online reservations,
select “Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention
Center” (2800 Opryland Drive, Nashville,

No matter where you're driving from, it's easy to

Center from area interstates, as well as the
Nashville International Airport. See below for

From Nashville International Airport (BNA):
Travel south on Terminal Drive toward BNA
Arriving Flights. After 0.7 mile, make a slight
right followed by a slight left to stay on Terminal
Drive. Travel 0.6 mile and take the ramp onto
Interstate 40 West. Travel 1.2 miles to exit 215B
and merge onto TN-155 North/Briley Parkway.
Travel 4.3 miles to exit 11 for Opry Mills Drive.
Continue straight ahead for 0.9 mile to Opryland

Conference Exhibit Show
This is the only national show exclusively for
interscholastic athletic directors. It is designed to
showcase the latest products, new technologies
and wide range of services relating to all areas of
high school athletics and activities. Whether you
are anticipating new construction, renovating or
looking for new revenue or fund-raising ideas
for your school, we urge all attendees to visit the
Exhibit Show.

Passport Game
This year, the NFHS/NIAAA will again be hosting
door prize drawings each day during Exhibit

The Tennessee Host Committee and NFHS/NIAAA
have organized special activities for registered
spouses/guests. The Sunday program will
feature an entertaining presentation, as well as
gifts and favors. The program and breakfast will
be at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 11. The
spouse/guest registration fee is $40 per person,
and includes Saturday “Welcome Reception,”
Sunday Spouse/Guest Program and Monday
“Backstage Tour of Grand Ole Opry.” Spouses

Many athletic administrators consider managing
athletic fields as one of the more challenging
aspects of their job. This is even more true
given today’s society where numerous media
story lines raise issues regarding risk management and the health and safety of participants
in athletics; many of which center on the actual
playing surface. Because of this it is critical that
Athletic Administrators have extensive background knowledge of what it takes to maintain
safe, reliable and sustainable sports fields within
a reasonable budget. While the Athletic
Administrator may/may not be involved in the

Requirements and
Refund Procedures
In order to register for an LTI course, you must
be a registered attendee of the conference.
Only attendees that pre-registered for LTI
courses will be admitted to the course. Your
name must be on the course roster in order to
enter the course. Walk-ins and changes are not
accepted at the classroom door. Upon course
completion, attendees will receive a course
evaluation. Once the evaluation is complete,
and attendance has been verified, an
acknowledgment of course completion will
be available in the Professional Development
section of the member profile.
Changes or Late Registration:
Advance registration for LTI courses ends
November 18. After that date, attendees may
register for LTI courses “online only” for
the on-site fee of $95/member or $160/nonmember.
Manuals may not be available for late registrants
(after November 18), but will be shipped
following the conference.

and changes until the course is full or 90

The NIAAA recognizes that extenuating circumstances occur and affect conference attendance.
Weather-related travel and personal emergencies
are examples. If registrants are unable to attend
or are late to a course due to extenuating
circumstances, they will have the option of a
refund or registering for another course.
Refunds will be sent to the individual/institution
that originally paid for the course within 30 days
of the close of the conference. The refund will
include the cost of the course minus a $25
processing fee. In case of extenuating
circumstances, please contact the NIAAA
office prior to the conference or on-site at
the registration booth.

Individuals who fail to attend a course or are late
by more than 15 minutes due to non-weather
travel issues, conflict with conference schedule,
conflict with school schedule, etc. will not
receive a refund. However, they may select
another open course. This change can only be
made at the registration booth. Credit will not
be given for any course that is missed.

than 15 minutes late after the start of the

Basic Eligibility:
Earning the CAA Designation:
There are 130 points attainable within the personal data form and a minimum 65 points are
required to qualify for the examination. Sample
personal data form available at www.niaaa.org.
Complete the application form online. Following
the processing of the application, you will
receive an e-mail including a “Personal Data
Form” (PDF), a copy of the “Study Guide” and
sample exam questions. The CAA PDF needs
to be returned by Tuesday, November 29 for
processing and approval.
Athletic administrators who satisfy the following
prerequisites may apply:
1. Bachelor's degree, or higher, from an
accredited institution;
2. Approval of Personal Data Form (PDF);
3. Two or more years of successful experience
as an interscholastic athletic administrator;
4. Employed by (or retired from) a school,
school district or state high school athletic/
activities association in such capacity that the
administration of interscholastic athletics is
(was) among job responsibilities;
5. Completion of Leadership Training Institute
Courses LTC 501, 502, 504 and 506;
6. Read the NIAAA Code of Ethics.

The Bicentennial State Park showcases the WWII

Ryman Auditorium

Parthenon in Centennial Park
Cheekwood Botanical Gardens
and Museum of Art
A tribute to classical architecture, the Parthenon
in Centennial Park houses one of the premier
museums in the area. The permanent collection
boasts notable works from 19th- and 20th-century American artists (Albert Bierstadt, Frederic
Edwin Church and Thomas Moran) and contemporary pieces crafted by emerging talents.
Athenian sculptures created from direct casts

Cancellation Procedures
In case of cancellation, all conference fees paid will
be refunded, minus a $50 cancellation charge, if
notice is given by Wednesday, November 23. If
your hotel reservation has been made, cancellations must be made prior to 72 hours of scheduled
arrival. Cancellations made within 72 hours of
arrival will forfeit one night’s room and tax.

Please Read Carefully
For Conference Registration:
1. Delegate early registration is $245 for NIAAA
members/state high school association staff,
or $325 for non-members when registering
by November 18. After November 18, all
registration fees are $345 (does not include
NIAAA membership). Each delegate registration includes one luncheon ticket and one
banquet ticket, as well as the registration gift.
2. Upon completion of your registration, an
email confirmation will be sent. If you do not
receive an e-mail confirmation by November
23, please call 317-587-1450 and ask for
conference registration.
3. The spouse/guest registration fee is $40 and
includes the Saturday reception for families of
registered athletic administrators, the Sunday
program, the Monday Backstage Tour of the
Grand Ole Opry, and admittance into the
exhibit hall and general sessions. It does not
include the luncheon, banquet or any optional
activities. Luncheon and/or banquet tickets
may be purchased in advance for $60 and
$80, respectively. Under no circumstances
will spouses and children who are not
registered for the conference be admitted
into the exhibit hall.
4. In order to provide ample workshop seating,
please select one workshop from each
session that is of interest to you.
