NEW CHORAL COLLECTIONS AND LARGE WORKS
Two new collections from grammy-nominated conductor Julian Wachner
S ele c te d S ac re d Work s of JULIAN WACHNER
VOLUME ONE
for SATB Chorus
From the Copland-esque influences in Alleluias, Intercessions, and Remembrances to the pop-influenced Sanctus and Benedictus from Wachner’s 1987 Missa Brevis, these selected sacred works
are a welcome addition to the repertories of church choirs and university ensembles alike.
Included are commissioned works from Harvard University (The Somerville Service), Boston University (Aaronic Benediction), and from Montreal’s famed Church of St. Andrew and
St. Paul (Psalm 67).

A collection of Julian Wachner’s more gentle and romantic settings of secular texts, well
suited to choirs of all levels. Drawn from three larger and much more epic works [Sometimes
I Feel Alive (1998); Rilke Songs (2001); Come, My Dark-Eyed One (2008)], the selections in this
anthology are the portions of those larger pieces that are able to be stand alone performances.

#twitterlieder: 15 tweets in 3 acts
for Soloists, Chorus, and Instrumental Ensemble or Piano
“#twitterlieder” chronicles life from birth to old age. It is comprised of 15 tweets, with no more than
140 characters in each. This work is in in three acts: Act I (Youth), Act II (Middle Age), and Act III (Old
Age). At the conclusion of each act, an unaccompanied “Greek Chorus” comments on the previous
life events and contains the only tweets in the work that rhyme. The very essence of tweeting is
brevity, and this is reflected in the duration of each movement; a vignette in a life unfolding. The
total duration of the complete work is approximately 25 minutes. However, if a shorter version
is desired, the work may be approached in modular manner. For example, a conductor may
choose to perform only one of the acts, only two or three from each act, only the unaccompanied choruses, etc. Whichever path you choose, I truly hope you enjoy performing this work.

Hear My Cry, O God
Baritone Solo, SATB unaccompanied
The composer has arranged a stunning rendition of
H. T. Burleigh’s unadorned adaption of the poignant,
anonymous, original melody. A brief sketch of Black
History is given, as well as a summary of why this
work is singularly unique in the history of American
music. It also is a heartfelt celebration of the African-American Spiritual, and the 150th anniversary
of the “Emancipation Proclamation”(1863–2013).

This work was commissioned to be performed as a
companion piece to Bach’s Cantata 112 (based on
Psalm 23). Based on Renaissance motet models, this
motet begins with the entire text sung to an originally
composed chant melody which then becomes the
basis for the rest of the work. The chant melody is repeated in long note
values, as a cantus firmus, sung alternately by the tenors and the sopranos,
while the other voices provide exuberant counterpoint.

“Lead, Kindly Light” is a setting of John Henry Newman’s well known hymn text. Newman was inspired
to write this text in 1833 after recovering from a
difficult illness. The overall tone is both reverent and
fervent, beginning with simple humility and rising to
a climax on the text: ‘And with the morn those angel
faces smile…’ The arc of the piece reflects the spiritual
journey of moving through the difficult night to the comfort of morning.

Variations on Arirang
Tenebræ factæ sunt
Stanley M. Hoffman
Stephen Sametz
Composed for the 2008 Sejong Music Composition
Competition, Stanley M. Hoffman presents a set of variations for piano based on a traditional Korean theme.
As performers move among the variations, they will
experience music influenced by the styles of Chopin,
Piazzolla, and Beethoven. The set of variations comes
to a close with a repeat of the opening arpeggiated
passage.
An expansive organ solo based on the Fifth Responsory for Matins of the Good Friday Service
(Ambrosian Chant). A descriptive musical setting
of darkness covering the earth and Christ crying
out “My God, my God, why has thou forsaken me?”
A powerful and moving solo appropriate for Good
Friday, or for concert use.

Lagniappe
David Ashley White
“’Lagniappe’ is a Cajun word meaning ‘extra gift,’ and
it is commonly used in some restaurants to describe
a small food offering presented on behalf of the chef.
Taking this connection with food one step further, I
discovered [that] Gordon Jacob, the English composer, picturesquely remarked that the tone of the celesta always reminded him of the taste of a ripe plum.”
—David Ashley White

This music is based upon the folk prayer, “Beside
the Still Waters,” inspired by the 23rd Psalm: Beside
the still waters, I will lay my body down, with breezes
floating o’er me, and a garland for my crown. I will see
the Light Eternal. I will breathe the open air. Beside
the still waters, O Lord, please lead me there.

HARPSICHORD
Triptych for Harpsichord
Frank Ferko
Based on Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass, and
What Alice Found There. Contents: ‘Twas Brillig; Gyre
and Gimble; Residents of the Tulgey Woods (Mimsy
Borogoves; Jubjub Bird; Frumious Bandersnatch); The
Tumtum Tree; The Jabberwock; The Vorpal Blade; Galumphing Back; O Frabjous Day! Also includes a Lexicon
of Terms.
Triptych for Harpsichord was composed in the
spring of 2000 for harpsichordist Tatiana Zenaishvili. Ms. Zenaishvili gave the world premiere of the
work in a concert in Rachmaninov Hall in Moscow,
Russia on January 25, 2001. She subsequently
performed the American premiere at a concert in
Lutkin Hall in Evanston, Illinois on April 17, 2001.
Triptych for Harpsichord employs formal concepts
which were commonly used in harpsichord works
of the 17th and 18th centuries—toccata, variations and fugue—but no attempt was made to simulate a baroque musical
style. The theme upon which the second movement is based is an old, Russian
folk song. The variations have maintained the tonal style of the original
melody. The fugue subject used in the third movement is based on a theme
introduced in the toccata movement.

C Trumpet and Organ
Composed in 2014, Blue, Green, Red, a three-movement piece

blues. Julian Wachner paints each movement’s respective color
with aplomb using the tone colors of the two instruments to
great effect. C Trumpet part included.
David Conte
Prelude and Fughetta
“Sonata for Violoncello and Piano was
written especially for cellist Emil Miland
[…] I fashioned in this piece long, arching melodies that are unabashedly lyrical and romantic in character. The first
movement, marked Allegro Moderato
Appassionato, is cast in an expansive sonata-allegro form, and its trajectory unfolds with bold, sweeping gestures […] the movement is highly chromatic, giving the musical character a sense of heightened inflection
and intensity.” —David Conte. Part included with score.

C Flute or Alto Flute and Organ
“[…]this piece deals with a friendly tug-of-war between diatonic and chromatic music. The theme one hears in both the
Prelude and the Fughetta is based on letters from the name of
the flute player who commissioned this work, Peter Sheridan.
The Fughetta is far from strict in terms of fugal rules […] more of
an imitative fantasia than anything else.” —Stanley M. Hoffman

Violin and Viola
This brilliant duo for violin and viola is a virtuosic work for professional players. It displays dazzling string techniques, jazzy
rhythms, and rich textures. The expressive reflections on the early
19th-century American hymn tune BOURBON is the real heart of
the piece. This piece is quintessentially American, and it is a marvelous addition to the literature.
Brass Quintet or Brass Ensemble
The title of the piece is the Latin word
for “imagination.” Opening with a lively fanfare, syncopated rhythms drive
the first section toward a reflective
middle section. Explorations of the
melody, counter-melody, and jazz-influenced harmonies are distributed among the various instruments. An accelerando then launches the return of the opening
material and builds toward a coda of vigorous rhythmic fanfares
and resolute melody.

Caprice Variations
George Rochberg / Christina Jennings
The arranger’s transcription includes 20 of the original 51 caprices. She chose to include those best suited to the flute while
representing the enormous stylistic range of Rochberg’s entire
set. Her goal for the transcriptions was to use the flute to its fullest capacity, challenging the player with dynamic, technical and
stylistic extremes: the range of these variations goes from a B1 to
an E4 and from pppp to ffz! She made minimal breathing and
metronome suggestions, adding these only when they seemed
most important. In George Rochberg’s Afterword to the Performer,
he permits omitting some of the repeats and variations to suit
the length and artistic discretion of the performer. However, he
advocates for balance in preserving “the stylistic spread which is
a fundamental premise of this work.”
