Week #1
Monday, March 28th:
1. Hand out the extra credit assignment for the nine-week period over Tuesdays
with Morrie, including the interview assignment they must do along with it. If
they wish to check a book out from me, they may do so before school.
2. Finish the narrative poem; share some and hand in.
3. Introduction to George Gordon Lord Byron (848); five minutes, five facts.
a. “She Walks in Beauty” (850)
b. Analyze the poem on the poetry analysis worksheet.
Tuesday, March 29th:
1. Finish the analysis of Lord Byron’s poem, “She Walks in Beauty.”
2. Introduction to Percy Shelley (860); five minutes/five facts.
a. Read “Ode to a West Wind” (page 864)
b. Analyze the poem using the back of the poetry worksheet
HW: Finish the analysis for homework
Wednesday, March 30th:
1. Finish Shelley’s poem’s analysis; hand in the poetry worksheet.
2. Introduction to John Keats (878); five minutes/five facts
3. Listen to Keats’ poem, “To Autumn” on page 884.
4. TP-CASTT the poem alone.
Thursday, March 31st:
1. Finish up TP-CASTT over Keat’s poem “To Autumn.”
2. Introduction to Autism Unit:
a. KWL Chart
b. Facts and symptoms
c. Video clips on you tube
Friday, April 1st:
1. Finish introduction
2. Journal: What have learned about autism? 5-7 sentences
Week #2
Monday, April 4th:
1. Students will read pages 915-925 on the Victorian Time Period. They will take
notes on Easel Pads (in groups); gallery walk around the room.
2. Discuss in detail.
3. Introduction to Alfred Lord Tennyson on page 928; write five facts about him.
Read about A.E. Housman on page 1060 and write five facts about him as well.
4. Begin a study of their poetry – students will be working on the questions that
follow each poem we study.
Tuesday, April 5th:
1. Finish studying the poems: “Ulysses” on pages 936 – 937 and “In Memoriam” on
page 938. Students will do the questions 5-7 on page 942 over each poem you
had to read.
2. Students will finish reading “To an Athlete Dying Young” on page 1062 and
“When I was one and Twenty” on page 1064.
3. Finally, students will do questions 1-4 on page 1065 over Housman’s two poems.
4. Introduction to The Reason I Jump; students will listen to an introduction to the
author from You Tube and we will discuss.
Wednesday, April 6th:
1. Finish the introduction to The Reason I Jump novel
a. Background information
b. Journaling assignment
2. Begin reading the novel together using audio book; stop to discuss and do
journals.
Thursday, April 7th – Friday, April 8th:
*Continue with The Reason I Jump
Week #3
Monday, April 11th – Thursday, April 14th:
1. Read, discuss and do the journals for the novel, The Reason I Jump.
2. Students will finish the novel by the end of the period on Thursday.
Friday, April 15th:
1. Hand in journals over the novel, The Reason I Jump.
2. Introduction video on Temple Grandin from You Tube.
3. Talk about her story a little.
4. Begin watching the movie, Temple Grandin.
Week #4
Monday, April 18th:
*Continue watching the movie
Tuesday, April 19th:
1. Finish the movie.
2. Hand in all assignments over autism.
3. The Modern/Contemporary Time Period Introduction (watch short video or power
point and take notes).
Wednesday, April 20th:
1. Introduction to the novel, 1984:
a. Surprise attack activity on unnecessarily stringent and inflexible rules.
b. List the freedoms you enjoy both in your home and in your community. List
the freedoms you are denied; discuss.
c. Information on George Orwell on page 1262 in the textbook; read and
discuss. Connect to past literature read by the author.

3. Stop to discuss symbols and themes that we can already see addressed from the
beginning.
4. Diary assignment (weekend diary)
Friday, April 22nd:
1984
1. Finish chapter one of the novel.
2. Tapping prior knowledge discussion: The Role of Government. Are there ways in
which government or the private sector intrudes upon the privacy of the U.S.
citizens? What are some of these ways?
3. Begin listening to chapters two and three of the novel.
Week #5
Monday, April 25th:
1. Hand in diary after sharing some of them.
2. Finish chapters two and three of the novel.
3. Discussion/Journal: Irony, Language/Logic/Character: The name Winston Smith
4. Nonfiction article on the 5 Things You Should Know About the FBI’s Massive New
Biometric Database; can the information be confirmed? Connect to the novel.
5. Begin chapter four.
Tuesday, April 26th:
1984
1. Finish chapter four.
2. What are the party’s mottos? What is unusual about them? (Paradox literary
device discussion.
3. What is Newspeak and what is the purpose? Who is Big Brother and what is the
significance of his name? Journal on these two topics.
4. Listen to chapter five.
Wednesday, April 27th:
1. Finish chapter five.
2. Journal: What is facecrime? Why is it so easy to commit?
3. Nonfiction Article section of website: look at the link 1984 under that and do the
investigation of invasion of privacy and manipulation of public opinion activity.
4. Begin chapter six.
Thursday, April 28th:
* Finish chapter six and begin listening to seven and eight.
Friday, April 29th:
1. Finish listening to Part One.
2. Discuss major symbols/themes/paradoxes/examples of irony, etc…
Week #6
Monday, May 2nd:
1. Finish anything to do with Part One.
2. “How Companies Learn Your Secrets” news article; read and discuss together as
a class; make connections to the novel.
3. Begin Parts II and III: This part of the book will be done differently; summaries
and excerpts will be used instead of the entire reading of the book:
Part Two:
a. Read chapter one in its entirety
b. Summarize major moments in chapters 2-5.
c. Read chapter six in its entirety.
d. Summarize chapter seven
e. Read chapter eight in its entirety
f. Summarize nine
g. Read chapter ten in its entirety
Part III:
a. Read chapter one in its entirety
b. Summarize chapters 2-4.
c. Read chapters 5-6 in their entirety.
*Students will be assigned reading homework for those chapters we are reading fully.
Tuesday, May 3rd:
1. Today, we will be focusing on Part II chapters 1-5. We will finish reading
chapter one and discussing it. Then, students will read summaries for the other
chapters.
2. After the reading/listening, students will do a variety of activities:
a. Discussion questions: character, theme, plot, irony/paradox, etc.. related.
See teacher guide for questions.
b. Create a constitution or bill of rights for the Brotherhood
c. Symbolism activity with the paperweight, the clock, the song the prole sings,
and the nursery rhyme about the bells.
Wednesday, May 4th:
1. Continue with activities from yesterday.
2. Read chapter six in its entirety.
Thursday, May 5th:
1. Finish reading chapter six.
2. Continue with activities.
3. Summarize chapter seven.
4. Begin chapter eight in its entirety.
Friday, May 6th:
1. Finish chapter eight and discuss.
2. Summarize chapter nine.
3. Read chapter ten in its entirety.
HW: Students will need to finish Part II of the novel over the weekend either on the
website, or they will need to come in before school on Monday to finish it.
Week #7
Monday, May 9th
1. Debate: On pages 203 and 204, the concept of memory and existence is
discussed. Does the past exist if no one remembers it? How can it be proven?
Debate this topic after reviewing O’Brien’s argument.
2. Part III begins: read chapter one completely.
HW: Students need to finish reading chapter one of Part III for homework.
Tuesday, May 10th:
1. Quiz over chapter one of Part III.
2. Discussion questions.
3. Summarize chapters 2-4; discuss major moments.
4. Begin reading chapter five.
Wednesday, May 11th:
1. Finish reading chapter five and discussion using questions.
2. Read the final chapter of Part III.
3. Discuss using discussion questions.
Thursday, May 12th:
1. Prepare and perform a rap or other song about the novel. This should provide
an overview of the book.
2. Begin pyramid game for reviewing for the test.
Friday, May 13th:
1. Begin pyramid game for reviewing for the test.
2. Study for the test.
3. Work on Tuesdays with Morrie for extra credit – due on Monday, May 23rd.

1. Test over the novel, 1984.
2. Work on semester project with time remaining.
