WS Teacher Resource 2
OBJECTIVE: The student will match word pairs with their corresponding
contractions.

INSTRUCTIONAL CONTENT:
• Structural Analysis: Contractions containing the word
not
INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITY:
• Contraction Concentration
Purpose: This activity teaches students to match
word pairs with their corresponding contractions.
MATERIAL/AT:
• Word cards in pairs, with not contractions written on
one of the cards of the pair and the corresponding
word combination written on the other card
DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION:
Grouping: Two to five students
1. Place all the word cards face down in rows, with word pair cards (e.g.,
should not, can not) in one row and contraction cards (e.g., shouldn’t,
can’t) in the second row.
2. Have the first student turn over two cards, one a word pair card and the
other a contraction card. The student should read them aloud, and if the
pair does not match, return them to their face-down position. If the two
cards do make a match, the student keeps those cards and takes another
turn.
3. Have the next student continue in the same manner.
4. Call on the students, at the end of the game when all pairs are held, to
read their contractions and the corresponding word pairs to the other
group members.
PROGRESS MONITORING:
After the lesson, provide each student with the list of practiced word
combinations and ask him or her to match each contraction to its word
combination. Use this information to determine which students need
individual instruction on common contractions.
Periodically, give each student a graded word list. Have each student read
the word list and record the percentage of words read correctly. Chart
performance and make instructional decisions as needed.
