Difference between mitosis and meiosis Mitosis Meiosis 1-Take place in the somatic cells of the body. 1-Take place in the germ cells. 2-Occurs in both sexually as well as asexually reproducing organisms 2-Occurs only in sexually reproducing organisms 3-The cell divide only once. 3-There are two cell divisions, the first and the second meiotic divisions. 4-Interphase occurs prior to each division 5-DNA replication takes place during interphase I 6-The DNA replicates once for one cell division. 7-The duration of prophase is short, usually of a few hours. 8-Prophase is comparatively simple. 9-There is no synapsis 4-Interphase precedes only in meiosis I. It does not occur prior to meiosis II. 5-DNA replication takes place during interphase I but not interphase II 6-The DNA replicates once for two cell divisions 7-Prophase is comparatively longer and may take days 10-Each chromosomes consists of two chromatids united by a centromere. 8-Prophase is complicated and divided into leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene, and diakinesis 11-Chromosomes are already duplicated at the beginning of prophase 9-There is Synapsis of homologous chromosomes 12-A synaptionemal complex is absent 13- Crossing over is absent. 14-Division of the centromeres take place during anaphase 15-The chromosomes separates simultaneously during anaphase 16-Spindle fibers disappear completely in telophase. 17-Nucleoli reappear at telophase. 10-The two homologous chromosomes from bivalents or tetrads. Each bivalents has four chromatids and two centromers. 11-When prophase I commences the chromosomes appear single, (although DNA replication has taken place in interphase I). 12-Synapsed homologous chromosome develop a synaptonemal complex. 13-Crossing over.. 14-There is no centromeric division during anaphase I. Centromeres divide only during anaphase II. 15-Short chromosomes separate early, separation of long chromosome is delayed. 16-Spindle fibers do not disappear completely in telophase I 17-Nucleoli do not reappear at telophase I.
