Cecilia, Martyr at Rome, c. 280
Cecilia is the patron saint of singers, organ builders, musicians and poets. She is among
the women named in the Roman Canon of the Mass. According to fifth century sources,
Cecilia was of noble birth and was betrothed to a pagan who bore the name Valerian.
Cecilia’s witness resulted in the conversion of Valerian and his brother. Because of their
conversion, the brothers were martyred and while Cecilia was burying them, she was
arrested. After several attempts to put her to death, she died from injuries sustained by the ordeal. The date
of her martyrdom is generally believed to be 230. Remembered for the passion with which she sang the
praises of God, Cecilia is first depicted in Christian art as a martyr, but since the fourteenth century she is
often shown playing the organ. Her story has inspired centuries of artistic representations in paintings,
sculptures, mosaics, and stained glass. Composers such as Handel, Purcell, Howells, and Britten have written
choral works and mass settings in her honor. From Holy Women, Holy Men.

Cecilia, Martyr at Rome, c. 280
Most gracious God, whose blessed martyr Cecilia sang in her heart to strengthen her witness to you: We
give you thanks for the makers of music whom you have gifted with Pentecostal fire; and we pray that we
may join with them in creation’s song of praise until at the last, with
Cecelia and all your saints, we come to share in the song of those redeemed by our Savior Jesus Christ;
who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Trumpet/Cornet/ Kazoo?
Advent is the season of preparation, expectancy and anticipation. It is the first Sunday
of the new year in the church calendar. Emmanuel is not The Cathedral Church of Saint
Peter and Saint Paul in the City and Diocese of Washington, nor are we the Cathedral of
the Incarnation in Baltimore City. You might say we compare to Nazareth rather than
Jerusalem in the Advent stories. But what we do in our community is significant and what we do
for ourselves as a congregation is meaningful and important, too. Stewardship is a year long endeavor, but we would like to have your pledge at the start of Advent which begins Sunday, November 27. Just like you, we need to be able to plan our budget based on your pledged support. If you
have already pledged we thank you for your gift.
Advent is a new season and we will be resetting the prayer list. As Mark has said in the past,
“We are happy to pray for anyone who would like our prayers… but we want to pray intelligently.”
He also suggested that folks put on the prayer list should be those for whom you pray daily. When
you request prayers it is helpful to us to know for whom you wish us to pray, why we are praying,
and who is making the request. Please remember, we simply say the first name of the person and
any further information is confidential. In reviewing the list, I saw that I had forgotten to update the
status of one of my friends. Thank you to all who are constant in helping us maintain an
“intelligent” list.
November 27, the first Sunday in Advent will begin the new list. You may email or call the
office to add your name to the list. Something new will be prayer request cards and envelopes at the
back of the church. We will try them this season. Let me know what you think of the prayer cards.

Where in the World is Rector Mark Gatza?
Mark is having interesting times and experiences. He is sharing his sabbatical work and travels
on the church website. Week Four has been posted.


The “Deep South,” 2-15 November: I have a hunch that there is something interesting that can come
from visiting Civil War sites and then nearby Civil Rights sites — though the truth is, I’m not yet sure
what it will feel like. I will drive first to Atlanta, then west to Memphis, south to Vicksburg and then Mobile and return through Selma and Montgomery. I plan to write about whatever I find, especially around
different ways of remembering. This is within the context of a conversation our Diocese is having after
our last convention about paying reparations for slavery, similar to Georgetown University recently.
Retreat at the Daylesford Abbey, 27 November—1 December: Since a portion of the book project will
describe the value of traditional Christian practices, I will spend time thinking about those with an experienced retreat leader.
Sabbatical Ends, 17 December
Sip and Paint—Sunday, November 20 from 1:30-4:30 in the Parish Hall
Sip and paint is not only an opportunity for fellowship for us at Emmanuel, but also a
chance to introduce our friends and community to our church. That being said, it is also an
opportunity for fundraising. Please think about inviting your friends and family to join us. We thank Teresa Grant for donating her time and talents to make this event possible.

Advent Scripture Study
Joan Kelly will begin leading Advent
Scripture Studies on Tuesday, 22 November 2016 and will continue
through 13 December in the Harwood Parlor. We will
be reading the weekly lectionaries, discussing and
relating them to our Advent preparation There will
be two discussion times for your convenience at 3:15
pm and 6:15 pm, each lasting about an hour. Advent
studies are open to High School students as well as
adults of all ages. Please spread the word and bring
your friend and family.
The Vestry Voice
The Vestry is the selected body of the parish
that shares with the rector the responsibility for
oversight of parish life and ministry. Our congregation has chosen to draw lots rather than
hold an election. Some specific responsibilities
include, but are not limited to:
 Help define and articulate the mission of the
congregation
 Support the mission by work and deed
 Ensure adequate resources in leadership
and in financial stewardship
 Manage resources effectively
 Oversee the upkeep of the church property
 Oversee the business affairs
of the church
