Leavitt - Akpik
Tuesday, February 4, 2014 we lost a friend, Luther Akpik Leavitt. His funeral was February 12, 2014 at Ipalook
Elementary. The 8th grade class sang for him and his family.
Nikki Peidlow, and Crystalynn Tula’i spoke for the students
of HMS. The songs the HMS students sang were, “I’ll Fly
Away”, “This Little Light of Mine”, and “Jesus Loves Me”.
Luther never put anyone down, he always had a smile on his
face and he always made people laugh. We will all
remember Luther simply as what he was, happy, hilarious,
and up-lifting. We dearly miss you Luther, and you will
always be in our hearts.

Utqiagvik Warriors - Basketball
Warrior Basketball Players: Keoni Hepa, Brendon Matthews, Calvin
Miller, Ben Heather, Sione Tuifua, Kamaka Hepa, Jalen Tracey, Travis
Adams, and Vaka Tuifua.
Travis Adams
Travis is a 14 year old
young man who has
been
playing
basketball with
Utqiagvik Warriors
for three years. The
Warriors’ coach is
Roland Hepa. Travis says
he likes the coach because he
has a sense of humor, and he has a lot of skill.
Travis’ strengths are dribbling, and scoring ; his
weakness is his long hair, and lemf (strong).
Travis is hoping he would have a basketball
career in the future, and he has been playing
basketball since he was a little boy. Tyler Adams
is his older brother, who taught him how to
play ball, and inspired Travis. They call Travis
“Tavarious Kings”, and “Cookies”. Cookies is
hoping he will have a basketball career over
seas. Travis never seems to miss a shot so I
asked him what makes him so lucky. He said it
was his hair. What breath-taking hair he has at
that.

Championship Game. 3 - 0
Sione Tuifua
Sione is a 14 year old 8th grader, and has
been playing with Utqiagvik Warriors for
three years. Coach Hepa is a great
coach to him because he never yells and
h e ’s p r e t t y
cool. Sione
can’t dunk,
but he can
touch rim
on a daily
basis. His
weaknesses
are agility,
and being
slow; his strengths
are rebounds and ranges. Steven
“Padlock” Adams is what they call him
now-a-days, and his role model is Kevin
Durant (not referring to Kamaka). He
started playing basketball because of his
bros: Calvin Miller “The Brow” and Travis
Adams. “Tavarious Kings”, and Kamaka
Hepa “KD”.
Kamaka Hepa
Kamaka is 14 years
old. He has been
with Utqiagvik
Warriors for three
years and has been
p l ay i n g b a s k e t b a l l
almost his whole life. His
father taught him how to play.
K D o r,
“Durantchula” as his teammates call him because
he seems like Kevin Durant. He has never made a
half court shot, but he can dunk pretty bad.
Marcus Smart is Kamaka’s role model. His average
for basketball is 15 points and 2.4 blocks, and he
is hoping he will have a basketball career in the
future. His team’s nickname is #DubSquad and
#DubNation. Also, Kamaka is a pretty sweet kid.
Sean Osborn
Sean is 14 years old, and he
has been with the
Warriors for two
years. He said that
his nickname is
“ M r . Ta a q p a n
Chubbs Usi” and
“Shun”. His
weaknesses are his
height, and dribbling
prowess; his strengths come out
durring run-offense. During Sean’s
first game he was nervous, scored
two points, then he ran to his nana
and gave her a high five! Sean is such
a cool kid, and a sweetheart. What
made him start playing basketball
were his friends. The basketball team
he plays on inspires him.
Calvin Miller
Calvin is a short,
crazy young kid. He
is 14 years old, and
he has been playing
ball with the Warriors
for two years now.
Coach Hepa is an amazing
coach to him because he pushes
Calvin
and the team to the limits. They call Calvin
“The Brow” because Calvin has an amazing
unibrow and it is lucky to Calvin. Chris Paul
is his role model. His dad, Dean Miller,
inspired Calvin to play basketball. Calvin
wants to further his education in the future
before he is pursued by the NBA to begin his
career in basketball.

Spirit Week often has a central
theme throughout the week. The
theme could be anything from using
school colors, its mascot and other
school-related ideas. The purpose of
Spirit Week is to get kids enthused
and supportive of school. The week
also serves to get students involved,
working cooperatively and united on
a common goal of promoting the
school. Did you show support
during our Spirit Week?

History of Valentines Day
by Daphne Mueller
!
We all know how Christmas and Thanksgiving came to be.
What about Valentines Day? Obviously it has something to do with a
dude named Valentine, but what’s the real story?
!
There are many different
stories of St. Valentine. One was
that the Romans had made a rule
that all single men were better
soldiers than married ones. So
they banned all the young men
from getting married. St. Valentine
protested this and was ordered to
be executed.
!
Another story is that he
was helping Christians escape the
Roman prisons. When the
Romans caught him, he was
thrown in jail. He fell in love with a
woman-maybe the jailor’s
daughter - and sent her love
letters. They read, “From your
Valentine.”
!
Valentines day could have
also come from a Roman
tradition. The citizens would kill a
dog and a goat. They would cut
the goats’ skin into strips and then
soak it in blood. All the single
women would line the streets to
get slapped by the soaked skins.
Then the women who were
covered in blood would get picked
by a young bachelor. Most of the
couples would get married.
!
Today we give out cheesy
cards and heart shaped candies to
our family and friends. Valentine’s
Day is all about the people you
care for.

Ever since 1976, February was
known throughout the United States as
Black History Month. The United States,
UK, and Canada has recognized the month
of February as Black History Month; a
month where we honor those people of the
African American descent who have made a
difference in our world. There are many
historical figures that you can read about,
just check our school’s library!
If you’re in sixth grade, try
checking out books like John H. Johnson,
“The Man From Ebony”, Fannie Lou
Hamer: From Sharecropping To Politics,
Charles Drew, or The Bridge of Selman. If
you’re in seventh grade, try checking out
“Now is Your Time: The African-American
Struggle for Freedom, Denmark Vesey, or
John Russwurm. Some excellent titles to
check out if in eighth grade would be
Mississippi Challenge, Bill Russell, or
Black History in America: A History
Though It’s People.
If you would like to learn more
about any historical figure, simply check
out a book. You never know what you might
learn- the possibilities are endless. Happy
Black History Month!

Hi kiddos, how would you like
to know about a new teacher
here at HMS? Some students
might call him hyper and some
might say he is fearsome or
maybe even fashionable - always
wearing a tie. If you guessed Mr.
Neyhard you would be right.
Alford Bankston got the chance
to interview him and in his own
words he says, “The interview
was very fun and interesting.”
Mr. Neyhard was born in

MAP TESTING
Ana Stringer
!
Each year, we take the MAP Tests
several times at HMS. ! In order to gain more
information on a topic I knew little about, I
interviewed the eighth grade math teacher,
Mrs. Cabana. The following is the conducted
interview:
Q: How do MAP scores
affect placement in a
student’s 7th period class?
What do these scores
determine?
A: MAP scores will
enable teachers to see
growth of students from
one benchmark score to another. If a
student has shown notable improvement, they
may be placed in an enrichment class. The
final score is an estimate of the student’s
achievement level.
Q: How do the MAP tests work?

A: In the MAP system, the difficulty of the test
is adjusted to the student’s performance. That
is, the difficulty of each
question is based on
how well the student
has answered all of
the questions up to
that point. As the
student answers
c o r r e c t l y, t h e
questions become
more difficult. If the
student answers
incorrectly, the questions become
easier. Within an optimal test, the student
answers approximately half the items correctly
and half incorrectly
Q: Do you have tips for students taking the
MAP test?
A:
1. Read each question carefully and
choose what you think is the best
answer.
2. Take your time and do not rush
through the test.
