TOPIC
Weekly Goals: After completing résumés last week, students will write a
general college-application essay. Near the end of the week, students will begin
exploring the prologue of The Canterbury Tales, preparing to read one tale and
create our own in the next few weeks In addition, we students will learn about
meter and literary elements within the Middle English selection.

groups and view various sample essays and discuss strengths and weaknesses.

Canterbury Tales

TTW introduce a daily grammar topic and TSW complete a corresponding activity.

TCW listen to the prologue read in Middle English. TCW discuss initial thoughts about
beat/verse/meter.

TTW give students a handout, and the class will discuss iambic pentameter. TCW stand and
act out the beat of various lines written in iambic pentameter. TCW discuss how iambic
pentameter is used in modern times with rap, after listening to a modern rap of
Shakespeare. TSW learn that Chaucer began iambic pentameter and preview our next
reading of Shakespeare to apply knowledge.

TSW work with a partner/group to begin a poem/rap/song of an assigned topic. Each group
will have a different topic and will construct two – four lines. When the bell rings, each
group will move to the next group and add on to the poem that the previous group began.

Groups will share their examples with the class once they get back to the starting point.
The class will recite the poems together in iambic pentameter, with a beat.

TTW introduce a daily grammar topic and TSW complete a corresponding activity.

TSW research topics related to the Middle English Period, including feudal systems, coat of
arms/knights, the Bubonic Plague, the role of women, and the Crusades (At each station,
students will be in groups of four). Each group member will assume the role of one of the
following: Lord/Knight/Peasant/Serf).

TSW complete an assigned activity at each station.
